Description

USDA Forest Service

There are three campgrounds in Sinks Canyon. Sawmill and Popo Agie campground are state park campgrounds. Sinks Campground is at the upper end of the canyon and is a National Forest campground. There are additional National Forest Campgrounds along the Loop Road (Highway 131) above Sinks Canyon.

The first campground you come to in the canyon is Sawmill Campground. It is mainly a day use area, but there are five campsites (one of which is a fully ADA accessible site) that can be used by either campers or tents.

There is a large day use picnic shelter at Sawmill Campground that is available on a first come first served basis.

Sawmill also has a small playground and climbing structure.

There are 24 sites in Popo Agie Campground (see campground map). Several at the lower end are walk-in tent campsites. Tents or campers can be used at all other sites. Large RV sites are very limited. There are no showers or hook-ups.

Most summers there is a camp host at both Popo Agie and Sinks Campgrounds.

Showers are available for a small fee in Lander at the community swimming pool (The Bruce Gresly Aquatic Center) during open swimming hours.

All camping in the canyon is first come first served – there is no reserving of sites.

All camping is primitive camping: tables, fire rings and pit toilets. There is drinking water available at all campgrounds, but no hookups.

Firewood is provided to campers on the state park (donation suggested).

Nice location, more expansive for non-locals

Reservation is mandatory in summer. Spot 25, 26, 27 and 28 are directly next to the playground. Waterpump available, non-flush-toilets, no running water. Every space has a parking spot, tent spot, fire ring and picnic table. Costs: $28 for a night as non-resident

Camping Next to a Cascade

This was a wonderful surprise in the heart of Wyoming. We spent the night on our return from Yellowstone. The campsite was right on the drive and next to a cascade in a deep canyon. The crashing waters helped me sleep well all night, while it kept my wife awake for the same reason.

Clean vault toilet, potable water, wildlife, and great trails.

Other camping areas with electricity and water are further in.

Nice little town with cute shops, and great ice cream just to the north.

We will return.

Small family friendly campground

This campground is located just inside the border of Sinks Canyon State Park, only 6 miles from the town of Lander.

This campground has a large group area with a very nice playground for the kids. It is rather close to the highway. The Popo Agie river flows through the campground and borders each campsite (I think there are about 6 sites.)

Sinks Canyon is a fantastic place to explore for the day or weekend. There are abundant hiking trails, mountain biking, and rock climbing ion the limestone cliffs.

this campground would be best for vans or small campers.
