remote and idyllic

My girl and I really enjoyed our time here at the Kara Creek pond. It is wide open and except for a couple farmers several hundred yards away, you are alone. Pitching a tent is easy on the flat, dry, stone free ground. There are two wooden picnic tables to lay out your gear or eat etc. For sanitation there is a port-a-potty conveniently located not too far away but not too close either. This is a grassy prairie type area and there are no trees. No campfires are allowed, and with all the dry grass and nearby livestock, it is easy to see why. We used a Coleman propane stove for our cooking needs. The pond itself is wonderful clean and cool, and we took a refreshing afternoon swim every day. We brought water, but I did top off canteens with pond water using a ceramic pump filter and had no trouble. There is an aluminum boat and plastic kayak there also, but we didn’t use them, preferring instead to just swim. The pond is loaded with tons of very hungry small fish also. The nights were quiet and pleasant with just enough ‘Coyote talk’ to remind you of where you are along with a beautiful view of The Milky Way. Our stay was in August, and it was warm, but a night breeze cooled things off nicely. There is no plumbing, Wi-Fi or cell phone signal- exactly what we wanted. The town of Sundance is only 10-minutes away. Cowboy Espresso which does a really nice job meeting any of your fancy coffee needs. There is a small grocery store which has all the food essentials. Roads getting in and out of the camp are in great shape and there is no need for 4-wheel drive at all. The saloon at Kara Creek ranch, just down the road, is an absolute gem and a must see while you are here. The ranch staff are super friendly, thank you Angie! Property Manager Cassie was very pleasant to deal with and responsive to all of our questions.
