Big Sandy Reservoir

Fishing draws many visitors to Big Sandy Reservoir, a dispersed camping area outside Farson, Wyoming, where the reservoir gives anglers direct water access and open sightlines toward the Wind River Range. Campers can launch boats from the boat ramp area and set up nearby, though the road can turn slick and muddy after rain. Cell coverage is available, with at least one reviewer confirming 5G service on T-Mobile.

Crowd levels tend to stay low. Reviews from midsummer and early September both note few other campers on site, and one visitor found the area entirely to themselves on a weekday after Labor Day. Bugs can be a factor at dusk, particularly near the water. Mice have been reported by at least one camper who stayed multiple nights, so storing food securely is worth the extra effort.

Toilets are on site, and the campground accommodates big rigs, ADA users, and pets. Construction was noted at the east and west campground areas in a 2023 visit, so conditions may vary by season. "Also great fishing at the reservoir," notes keera B., who arrived late and stayed just one night. Campers wanting developed facilities nearby can consider Big Sandy Reservoir Rec Area, about 1.4 miles to the northeast, or Big Sandy Dam and Reservoir just half a mile away.

Great spot for a break from the traveling grind

Found the spot no problem. Not sure how many spots but the reservoir is very big with campers dispersed all around it so lots and lots of room. Probably 10 or more campers in sight and some out of sight, closest one to us was about 1000 yds or more away. Some fishermen came on Sunday morning at daybreak but just drove by our spot. Areas are pretty level, road ok, no major issues. Just a little washboard-y. It's September 6th, memorial day weekend and temps are high today of 77⁰. Got chilly last night, 47⁰ but being from Pennsylvania, didn't mind it at all. Climate is very dry as this is in what's considered the high desert, about an hour south Jackson and the grand tetons which you can easily see in the distance. Gets a little windy. Had some good gusts today. Had a mouse in the camper overnight in the garbage. Sites are probably about 2 miles off the main road. Can hear vehicles faintly but not anything that'll keep you awake. Can see wild mustangs about a 1000 yds away as I'm writing this. Great cell service, well with tmobile anyway. All in all, a great spot and would definitely stay here again.

Great last minute spot

This was a last minute decision m. We were trying to make it up north as much as we could. Not very busy for first week of July on a camper trailer.

The view is breath taking

Got to the West Campground at dusk. Bugs were swarming. The view of the Wind River range at sunset is gorgeous. Not too many campers.

Peaceful

Only stayed a night, got in at 9pm and left around 8am. Peaceful and quiet with no one else around. No mice, just some moths. Had some great views when the sun came up! Also great fishing at the reservoir!

Camping close Sept 2023

We dispersed by boat launch. By ourselves on a Wednesday after labor day. Construction at east and west campgrounds. 5g cell T-Mobile. Roads only slightly muddy but after a rain. Yikes.
