Northwest River Park & Campground features equestrian trails that accommodate riders of various experience levels. The park's trail system connects to a broader network of riding paths throughout the Chesapeake area. Campsites accommodate horse trailers with ample parking space, though no dedicated horse corrals are available on the property. Campers can choose from tent, RV, and cabin accommodations, with electric hookups and water access points throughout the grounds. The equestrian trails remain accessible year-round, with rangers maintaining trail conditions even after heavy rainfall. Riders particularly appreciate the varied terrain that provides both challenging sections and more leisurely routes through natural woodland settings.

Located approximately 37 miles southwest of Cape Charles, Northwest River Park serves as the primary equestrian camping destination in the region. Riders access the trail system directly from the campground, with multiple entry points that connect to over five miles of marked bridle paths. Water access for horses is available at designated points throughout the trail system. The campground operates seasonally from April 1 through November 30, with advance reservations highly recommended during peak summer months. Trail riders note the park's well-maintained paths and the opportunity to observe local wildlife, including deer and various bird species. Horse owners should bring their own portable containment systems as the park does not provide permanent equine housing facilities. The park's location near the Northwest River provides scenic riding opportunities with views of natural waterways.

      Kiptopeke State Park Campground

      Camping in high winds

This campground was very enjoyable.  I spent a lot of time at the fishing pier, learning to ID birds I had never identified before.  Brown pelicans were everywhere near the sunken ships.  I also talked to the Hawkwatch people for a bit.

My campsite was far enough from the bathroom I couldn't hear the door slam, but since I was the only one in the F loop, that wouldn't have mattered.  Since the loop was so empty, it was an absolute pleasure.

Had the campground been full, I would have felt too close to the people in tents in the sites next to me.

One great thing was that there weren't tent pads so we didn't have to worry about how to fit two tents on to one tent pad.

      Chesapeake Campground

      Great local quiet spot!

I loved staying at this campground. It’s definitely geared towards locals and quiet stays, no campground events and things of that nature, but it’s perfect for someone not looking for the fluff. They do have two pools, basketball courts, kayak rentals, and I believe pony rides! They have a really nice climate controlled game room too. They are extremely fairly priced. They also have THE best campground bathrooms I have ever seen. Seems like they host a lot of events, club and troop weekends, things of that sort. I really enjoyed staying there and I will be back. Nice low key local spot for someone in the full time RV life or needing an affordable quiet place to stay while in the area.

      Kiptopeke State Park Campground

      A great place!

This is a great campground. Well maintained, nice and quiet. C loop has full hookup where A and B do not. Plenty to do, hiking, fishing, birding. Camp store is nice, the staff for the park are great. The bathhouses are a little dirty, but not terrible. One of our favorite places to camp for sure! Try and get C loop spots 15 - 21. They’re shaded and at the back of the loop.

      Chippokes State Park Campground

      Nice wooded campsites

Very clean and easy setup. The campsites on the A loop are a little more on an angle, they converted tent site lots to camper lots so they come with a level tent area as well.

The pool doesn’t look like it’s been opened in years but there is a little beach area near the welcome center.

      Northwest River Park & Campground

      Under construction ~

This is a beautiful campground! There are only seven campers here in this campground, and I can't believe it. The sites are gravel and mostly level but I did have to use a couple blocks of my levelers. There are picnic tables and fire pits at each site, however my picnic table has a very very warped bench. But it makes no difference to me as it is only me, and I have my own chairs! The bathrooms are clean and well lit. The only thing I have a problem with here, is that there are no garbage cans or dumpsters near the campsites. The only garbage containers I found were near the dump station, which is on the way out of the park, nowhere near the campground! There is lots to do within this camp, let alone in the area around the camp. I have noticed two hiking trails, I have seen the kayaks that are for rent and the area you launch, all we need now is some nicer weather. Other info, I asked if they had weekly rates and was told yes. But of course you are limited to 14 days like so many other campgrounds. When I arrived and talked to the clerk about the weekly rates, all he did was multiply the daily rate by the number of days. There is no discounted weekly rate. They also do not take Sam's club, do not have senior discounts, etc.. I don't know if their site on the the dirt shows the price, but it was $42 for the first night and drops to $38 per night for the rest of my stay.

    Guide to Cape Charles

Equestrian camping options near Cape Charles, Virginia feature designated trails and facilities for riders and their horses. Cape Charles sits on Virginia's Eastern Shore with a distinct coastal environment characterized by tidal marshes, barrier islands, and maritime forests. While Northwest River Park provides the region's main horse trails, several other campgrounds within 40 miles offer alternatives for equestrians.

    What to do

Trail riding opportunities: Chesapeake Campground provides access to nearby equestrian paths. According to one visitor: "There were a lot of child friendly activities to do here. It's about 40 mins from the beach. We tent camped and had a blast."

Beach exploration: Kiptopeke State Park Campground offers two distinct beaches accessible via wooden boardwalks. "This park is a nice place to bring your family to camp, fish, crab and relax by the beach and collect seashells. It has 2 beautiful beaches, one that allows pets and the other does not," notes Annemarie R.

Plantation exploration: Beyond equestrian activities, Chippokes Plantation State Park Campground offers historical experiences with its working farm. Rose H. observes: "This hidden gem is just a short distance from Williamsburg but yet so remote! The still working farm and homes are a treasure of how life and farms ran back in the day."

    What campers like

Diverse trail terrain: Many riders appreciate the variety of equestrian trails near Cape Charles. At Northwest River Park & Campground, campers find established paths for horses. Elizabeth V. notes: "Equestrian trails available, which is always a plus."

River access for horses: Water access points along riding trails provide needed refreshment for horses during rides. A Northwest River Park camper reported: "Plenty of room..showers/bathrooms huge..water NOT at all sites but easy to fill tanks. Some sites close to main road but not a lot of traffic."

Wooded campsites: Shaded spots provide relief during summer months. According to Johnathan M. at Chippokes State Park: "Very clean and easy setup. The campsites on the A loop are a little more on an angle, they converted tent site lots to camper lots so they come with a level tent area as well."

    What you should know

Seasonal flooding concerns: Low-lying areas can experience standing water after storms. At Northwest River Park, Nicole L. cautions: "Because this area is near wetlands some of the campsites were flooded throughout the weekend. If rain a lot of rain is forecasted you may want to talk to one of the rangers about your particular site."

Site selection strategy: Some campgrounds offer better positioning for horse trailers. At Kiptopeke State Park, Ashley I. advises: "1st two rows of sites have almost ZERO tree cover. 1st row not very level sites. Not quite as spacious/spread out sites as other state parks, but it's on the bay!"

Reservation requirements: Horse-friendly campsites often require advance booking. During peak season (April-October), equestrian sites fill quickly, especially for weekend stays. Call at least 14 days ahead for weekend spots or 7 days for weekday reservations.

    Tips for camping with families

Wildlife viewing options: Children enjoy spotting local animals while trail riding. At Kiptopeke State Park, Gabby B. shares: "Wild animals usually pass by often later in the evening, horses, deer, rabbits etc; sites are nice and big. Some sunny some shady."
