      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Christopher Run Campground

      Great location on the lake

Something for everybody; long term slots, primitive camping, with electricity and water, with full hookups, day use ramps for Lake Anna, huge covered picnic area for large gatherings, rv sites in the woods and others on the edge of large field. Staff are great.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Point Lookout State Park

      5 stars! Beautiful, clean, magical

Magical stay at Point Lookout — New Tulip Loop (Full Hook‑Up) and I’m already planning a return. The whole park feels peaceful and safe, the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, and our site is clean and well‑maintained. The loop’s energy felt magical — quiet, restorative, and tucked into the trees so it felt private but not isolated. Full hookups were convenient and reliable; the site layout is roomy and pet‑friendly, with an easy walk to a beautiful dog beach so our pup had a blast. We walked to stunning beaches and spent afternoons watching water and sky at the tip of the peninsula — spectacular views where the Potomac meets the Chesapeake. The park’s Civil War history and lighthouse added fascinating, walkable sites to explore between beach time, giving the stay both recreation and depth. Clean facilities, helpful staff at the park office, and well-marked trails made everything low‑stress and enjoyable. If you want a peaceful, historic, pet‑friendly Class A spot with full hookups and gorgeous nearby beaches, Tulip Loop at Point Lookout is five stars from me.

      Lake Anna State Park Campground

      Wonderful End to Summer

We camped here Labor Day weekend 2025. Our site was nicely situated between a trail down to the lake and bathhouse.

We had a long driveway that was perfect for throwing a ball around. Plenty of space to spread out, and surrounded by trees.

Enjoyed a sunset walk down to the lake and exploring the entire beach area. Loved seeing the turtles at the pond and exploring two different play areas.

      Matoaka Beach Cottages

      Fantastic location with winderful hosts

Private campground with cabins and tent sites. Tent sites are first come, first service so call ahead to ensure the space is available. The host family was very nice and easy to work with and talk to. Fire pits were at tent sites and past the office was beach access into Chesapeake Bay. There are trash bins and porta potty’s on sight that are all maintained and kept clean. Beautiful sights and plenty to do in the area with DC being roughly an 40-60 minutes away.

    Guide to Dogue

Cabin options near Dogue, Virginia extend beyond the standard campground experience. The Potomac River region sits at relatively low elevations between 20-200 feet above sea level with a humid subtropical climate. Winter cabin rentals often include heating systems, while summer accommodations focus on proximity to water recreation. Cabin facilities vary significantly in age and construction materials across the region.

    What to do

Water activities: Access the Potomac River from Westmoreland State Park Campground, where fossil hunting is popular. "We came from Pa/De and wanted to look for sharks teeth. It was beautiful here so we decided to stay the night. We only have a small tent and some snacks. Lol but we are having an amazing time," writes Sara A. The park offers multiple beach areas for different preferences.

Seasonal events: Experience Halloween camping at Richmond North - Kings Dominion KOA for themed activities. "Had a great time for Halloween here. Will be back," notes Jason L. The campground provides shuttle service to the amusement park until midnight during seasonal events.

Nature trails: Explore forested paths with educational components. At Bull Run Regional Park, families can participate in guided activities. "There are miles of trails and my gkids enjoyed the nature scavenger hunt. You even get a prize when you finish," reports Bridget H.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Prioritize comfort at cabin locations with regularly maintained bathrooms. A visitor to Bull Run Regional Park specifically mentioned, "I'll go again just for the showers... Best review I can give us of the bathrooms. They're with staying again alone. Locking doors, individual stalls. Hot dog. Best camping showers I've ever had."

Privacy between sites: Enjoy seclusion at woodland cabin areas. Smallwood State Park Campground offers good separation between accommodations. "The sites are well spaced, and while on the smaller side they're very private with woods between each one. Bathrooms were clean and well stocked," writes Caitlin A.

Convenience to attractions: Stay connected to regional points of interest. "We stayed at Bull Run Regional Campground on our visit to Washington DC. It was fall and the colors were gorgeous. The sites are all pull-through off the roads through the campground. So your camper faces the woods and you feel like you're all alone," notes Roberta K.

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Plan for weather variations when booking cabins near Dogue. At Smallwood State Park Campground, visitors found specific benefits to off-season stays. "We've camped here on 3 separate occasions. The grounds were clean and perfect for us. The bathrooms and showers were clean and well lit. Mattawoman Creek is right there and great for kayaking," reports Lorraine P.

Booking requirements: Prepare for minimum stay policies at certain locations. Bull Run Regional Park implements strict reservation rules. "The real kicker is a 2-night minimum stay. Even mid-week. In APRIL for gosh sakes!" notes Stuart O.

Site selection: Research cabin locations before finalizing reservations. At Westmoreland State Park, specific cabin numbers offer different experiences. "Cabin 24 is a 2BR/1BA cinderblock cabin with waterfront views and large yard space. One room has two bunk beds, dresser, shelving, a lamp, and two night stands. Other room has a queen bed, shelving, a lamp, night stand, and dresser," details RL.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Choose cabins near play areas for convenient supervision. The Fredericksburg-Washington DC KOA offers designated activity zones. "Pool facility looks clean and good size for all to enjoy. With a playground right next to it and a small mining operation for the kiddos," reports Edward S.

Educational opportunities: Incorporate learning into your cabin stay. Westmoreland State Park provides natural history exhibits. "I love the sharks' teeth display in the shop and when I was there they were working on putting bones together of a whale that was found!" shares RL.

Organized activities: Take advantage of scheduled events for children. Bull Run Regional Park coordinates family-friendly programming. "They had a campfire complete with s'mores followed by hayrides. Great family friendly campground," mentions Bridget H.

    Tips from RVers

Campsite selection: Verify site dimensions and layout before arrival. At Aquia Pines Campground, access can be challenging for larger rigs. "Like most reviews on google state its tight and wooded. We have a 42' fifth wheel and even though it was tight we made it through with no issues," advises Ashley S.

Utility connections: Check hookup types and locations at cabin and RV sites. Richmond North - Kings Dominion KOA visitors recommend verifying what's available. "We stayed during the covid pandemic when things were just starting to open back up, so the play grounds weren't available. The bathrooms are clean and the laundry facility is a plus," notes Samantha G.

Weather preparation: Plan for drainage issues during rainy periods. Bull Run Regional Park has specific site concerns. "While we were here, there was a fairly heavy day of rain. Couple inches, I suppose, but nothing Biblical. The mouths of the metal culverts in our loop were bent downward from campers driving over them, which obstructed the flow. Result was lots of standing water at our campsite," cautions Stuart O.
