      Great stop!!

Best campground I’ve stayed at on a bike. Very welcoming, quiet and peaceful. Few small town stores about a mile away including gas. Nice bath houses with shower. We had a fire every night and good conversation. Great stop, 10/10 I will make a point to be back!

      New Price

Dyrt says $40-$42. Price now is $56. Decent place. Easy on off off IH77. Prefer this to most KOA’s for value. Nice, tree filled sites, clean and well lighted shower rooms, rural setting, but near a city. Definitely would recommend.

Camp Burson Campground — Hungry Mother State Park

      Awesome experience

We absolutely loved Camp Burson at Hungry Mother. The camp was clean and friendly. The spaces were somewhat close together, but they were large, so it didn’t bother us. There was a hiking spot just across the road, a camp store with ice and firewood, and a nice bath house with flush toilets and showers. The beach was a short drive away. The staff there was very nice and the beach was well maintained. The real stars were the camp hosts, The Viles. The sweetest couple. So friendly and helpful. They made our stay so much better. Highly recommend this campground. If there was a playground here, it would be 5 stars. There was one by the beach, but not within walking distance.

      Favorite KOA yet

Our favorite KOA yet. Beautiful campground, nestled into forest with pines, deciduous trees, and native Rhododendron. Beautiful. Clean sites and facilities. Just off 77 not far from Roanoke. Would stay here again!

      Excellent Overnight

Busy but we spent a very quiet night and woke up to local livestock out the window. Glad we tried it!

Got propane and had easy access to highway in the morning.

      Wonderful hiking

We had unseasonably warm temperatures in October. Fall colors were just past peak. Our site was clean, spacious, level. Easily accommodated our 25 foot RV. Trails started close to our site and were just beautiful. Bath house was ok. There is a washer and dryer available. Plenty of grass for the pups to enjoy.

      Wonderful stay!

Loved my site- I’m a tent camper and my tent just fit on the site- I had a tent footprint and padding inside my tent so as not to damage the tent floor - the site is a paved site meant for campers but I wanted to be by the creek! The bathrooms were in great condition and the camp hosts were very friendly!

      Wouldn’t stay again

As far as the sites goes, ours was okay, but a lot of the sights were not level. All the sites to the left of the pond had the tongue on the ground and the rear jacks had pretty extreme crib blocks just to get the jacks to stabilize. The landscaping was not very well taken care of and the sites really need gravel. It was a muddy mess when it rained. On a positive note each site had a concrete pad.

The pool was extremely cold and had a lot of algae around the rim, but it does have the slide which my daughter enjoyed. The bowling alley had I think 6 lanes and it was pretty good. The putt putt golf is in rough shape so we didn’t even do it.

The staff that I dealt with were definitely odd. They weren't friendly at all, but rather very straight forward and weird. Altogether, I won’t stay here again. I will try on up the road at Fancy Gap or Mayberry on our travels through 77/74.

      FANTASTIC!

I typically steer clear of KOA's because most of the sites are super close together. This KOA is different! There is a row towards the front that are pretty close together, but I think they use those for one-nighters. We were in a tent and loved our spot. The staff was UNBELIEVABLY awesome and nice. They have a pool, a pond, a playground, a dog park, and a great camp store. The bathrooms and laundry room are exceptionally clean. If you order ice or firewood, they bring it to your site. They also have food you can order and they will bring it to your site. I am sure there are many things I am forgetting, but this is a must stay and we will be back.

Out in the woods, beautiful ride in!

We just spent the night, did not get to use any of the facilities. Beautiful ride in, drove by so many deer on the side of the road. Very clean, well organized, sites are almost level on their own. Not a lot of privacy, but plenty of room. We will have to come back and spend more time.

      Beautiful campground, uncomfortable bed

There are a lot of good things to say about this campground and one negative.  We stayed in a camper cabin to break up a long drive and the mattress was so thin that we could easily feel the metal frame through the "mattress" (really a thin pallet--hence the 3 stars, rather than 5). This KOA really needs to upgrade their mattresses, especially if they're charging such a high price for a cabin without a bathroom. Now onto the good stuff: it's a clean campground with a nice pool area and good camp store. The bowling alley was great and the on-site cafe has really good pizza. Tent campers have good options: I liked the 3 sites near the camp store because they were grassy and roomy enough for both tent and canopy. Other tent sites at the back of the campground were smaller, level, and had gravel pads. RV sites to either side of the fishing pond were mostly level and looked easier to navigate than the ones at the back of the campground; however, RV sites at the back had more shade. Had the bed been comfortable, I would have given this place 5 stars. I would be happy to return again (but this time as a tent camper).

      Big Rig Friendly

This campground is probably 90% big rigs. It’s a huge campground with 2 lakes, playground, RV store and shelter houses. There is only one shower house with one shower and two toilets on each side. Pet friendly on leash. Close to Mount Airy for those over 60 who want a trip down Memory Lane.

      Nice campground

Campground was nice, staff was helpful.

Site was level. Wifi was decent.

Only complaints it was near interstate traffic. The noise didn't keep us up at so it was tolerable. I was in site 95. Sites in other sections may have better.

Also there was only trash cans in the front of the park near the office. This made it inconvenient picking up after my dogs.

      Very easy

Easily accessible with a large RV. Has multiple pull through sites, bath house and laundry close by. We were there during off season so some of the park was closed and they collected payment through honor system. We did some great hikes and walked around the beach area which was very nice. Would love to revisit during warmer months.

      Great stop if passing through

We stopped here while driving down 81. It’s right off the highway, but nice and secluded. It’s a little barren (not enough trees) but the facilities and sites are quite nice. They even have a bowling alley on site! It’s nice enough we are stopping again on the way home.

      Beautiful

We stopped here on our way to Florida, extremely convenient to the 81/77 junction. The star of this show is the scenery - absolutely gorgeous, and their seriously out-of-date website doesn't do it justice. Surrounded on three sides by open fields full of cows and sheep, and awesome mountain views, this place couldn't have been any more peaceful. There's a pool but it was closed, and when I asked why the person working said, "no idea." That was the answer to a couple of questions - the person on wasn't the friendliest. We had to stay an extra night because of mechanical trouble, but we did laundry, walked around, just relaxed and watched the cows. Small store, ice and propane available. Full hook-ups. Some shade trees, close spaces but not packed too tightly overall. Lovely spot. Lost one star because the staff was meh.

Royal Oak Campground — Hungry Mother State Park

      Peaceful campground w/ great facilities

We stayed here for an overnight stop on our road trip through Virginia, and it was lovely! The campground was easy to navigate, and the bathroom facilities were very clean (heated, showers, flushable toilets). There’s a potable water faucet by the bathrooms, and you can buy firewood at the Creekside Campground across the road. We stayed in site #11, which backs up to the trees, but it requires a steep walk from the parking spot up to the tent platform. I’d definitely stay at this campground again, but I‘d probably pick a different site with easier accessibility.
