Cloverdale Farms

Farm animals provide the soundtrack at this 20-acre working farm in Cumberland County, where a rooster serves as an early alarm clock and goats, chickens, and horses roam the property. Campers choose their own spots across gently rolling hills and cleared woodland areas, with access to a water spigot, indoor bathroom, and even a refrigerator in the main house. The property sits five minutes from James River boat landings for fishing and swimming access.

Host-provided firewood supports campfires under open skies that offer clear views of the Milky Way. A small creek runs through the acreage, and guests can help with garden work or collect fresh eggs during their stay. The setup works well for campers comfortable with informal, choose-your-spot camping and those who enjoy interacting with farm animals.

Our first roof top tent experience

My partner and I were traveling to Richmond, we needed a quick place to stop and rest. We reached out the day of and the owners of the property were so kind, accommodating, and understanding. They set us up with firewood, and all the necessary equipment to have a wonderful night under the stars. The icing on the cake was waking up and spending some time with their horses and goats and this really sweet orange cat. The property was gorgeous and the experience was wonderful.

Peaceful country setting

What a great little place to spend the night. The host is super nice and friendly. You just set up camp wherever you feel like it on her little farmette and enjoy the peace and quiet and privacy that you don’t get in a campground. You have access to a water spigot and a fridge if you need it as well as a bathroom in the house. The sounds of nature and farm animals surround you round the clock. Fyi the rooster is an early (and persistent!) riser!

Camping at Cloverdale

We’ve got a little 20 acre hobby farm. This historic property has gently rolling hills, with a little creek amidst a couple acres of cleared, open, secluded woodland perfect for pitching a tent and listening to nature. Fields in the back lend a great view for star gazing and looking up at the Milky Way. If the peace and quiet isn’t enough for you, there are pet goats, cats, a dog, and chickens that all love attention. Guests are more than welcome to help in the garden, pick flowers, and enjoy fresh produce and eggs while they’re here. Located 5 minutes from the James River, guests can hop over to the boat landing for fishing, swimming and boating or check out Blanton and Pleasants, a community staple. If you’re a hiker, there’s a state forest and state park just a short 15 minute drive west.

SiteAnywhere on the property is okay to post up. There are several burn piles placed around the property and wood is available
