SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Free dispersed camping on BLM land outside Rockville comes with a significant caveat at Wire Mesa: the access road is rough, rocky, and not suited to low-clearance vehicles or RVs. The final stretch involves washboard surface and uneven terrain that has challenged even experienced drivers. High clearance is strongly recommended, and 4WD or AWD provides a meaningful advantage, though several campers in stock SUVs have made it through with careful tire placement.

Camping is dispersed, meaning there are no assigned sites, water, or hookups. The spots that see the most use are located at least a half mile past the "no camping" signs, as required by BLM regulations. Campers have established fire rings using rocks from the surrounding area, and multiple pull-offs give groups some separation. jenny S. describes the experience as "beautiful views and stars," which aligns with the plateau setting and open sightlines toward the surrounding peaks. Gnats can be a nuisance, particularly in warmer months, so insect repellent is worth packing.

The mesa sits within camping near BLM Land — St. George Field Office territory and functions as a practical base for day trips into Zion. Trails are within walking distance of the camping area. Note that pets are not permitted. If rain is in the forecast, use caution: reviewers have noted evidence of vehicles struggling to exit the road after wet conditions. Those willing to work for the site will find a quiet, low-traffic spot with open skies overhead.

Wire mesa plateau

Beautiful views and stars. Easy to get to location convenient for Zion day trips. Only downside was lots and lots of gnats. Bring citronella :)

Good spot with nice view

Rough washboard road to get up the hill but my suv with Awd did just fine. The pin for this tells you to drive past the little parking lot and continue on the rough road that kinda looks like a trailhead but we ended up taking a right of the main washboard road then another right pretty quick where we found a few different spots with fire rings. Had 2 other staying in that little area so felt good staying there even though it wasn’t 1/2 mile past the sign. Could also hear some others that went to the next pull off. Overall really nice tucked away spot!

Beautiful

Great spot but if you don’t have the ground clearance to get back 1/2 mile from the trailhead you may have to pack your stuff in. Super easy either way!

Beautiful campground but a nerve wracking drive in

This spot is secluded and we were the only ones there. The last mile of the drive to the site is extremely rocky and uneven. We did make it in our dually van that is RWD, but there were several spots we were holding our breath!!

It is VERY secluded, so prepare accordingly. It won’t be somewhere you want to drive in and out of frequently, but it is stunning! Trails in walking distance as well.

Keep Driving - beautiful views

We did not end up staying here overnight because of the heat and potential rain but wanted to check it out. If you go past the no camping 1/2 mile signs there are plenty of options in this area for dispersed camping so keep driving at least 1/2 mile from those signs. Unlike the prior post, it says you CAN camp as long as you're a half mile from the no camping signs as it is BLM land.

There are plenty of places people have camped before when the fire restrictions were lifted and left perfect fire rings with rocks from the area all spaced out well. One underneath a big rock assuming they must have had some wind.

If there is any chance for rain/storms, be careful. You can see where people have struggled to get out.

I would recommend a 4x4 vehicle but stock is fine. My boyfriend claims I could have taken my stock Grand Cherokee (Altitude) up it with the right tire placement on the rocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the camping regulations at Wire Mesa Campground?

Wire Mesa is a dispersed camping area where you must camp at least half a mile past the posted "no camping" signs. This is important to follow as there are designated areas for camping beyond these markers. Standard dispersed camping regulations likely apply, including pack-in/pack-out policies for trash, fire restrictions during dry seasons, and Leave No Trace principles. The area doesn't appear to require specific permits for camping, but it's always advisable to check with the managing agency for current regulations and seasonal restrictions before your visit.

What recreational activities are available at or near Wire Mesa Campground?

Wire Mesa offers spectacular sunset viewing opportunities with amazing vistas of the peaks. Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the dramatic landscape and lighting conditions, particularly during golden hour. The area is perfect for stargazing due to its remote location away from city lights. Hiking trails are accessible in the vicinity, though they may require some navigation skills. Wildlife watching, nature observation, and simply enjoying the solitude of this beautiful mesa setting are primary activities. The surrounding region likely offers additional outdoor recreation options, including more extensive hiking networks and possibly mountain biking trails.

What amenities and facilities are available at Wire Mesa Campground?

Wire Mesa is a primitive dispersed camping area with no developed amenities or facilities. You won't find water sources, restrooms, picnic tables, or fire rings. Campers need to be completely self-sufficient, bringing all necessary water, food, and camping equipment. Pack out all waste as there are no garbage disposal services. The undeveloped nature of this site means you'll experience true backcountry camping, so prepare accordingly with supplies for the duration of your stay and emergency provisions.

Where is Wire Mesa Campground located and how do I get there?

Wire Mesa Campground is located near the stunning peaks region, offering beautiful sunset views of the surrounding landscape. Getting there requires some off-road driving, and a vehicle with high clearance is recommended for navigating the trail. You'll need to drive at least half a mile past the "no camping" signs to reach the designated dispersed camping areas. The trail to the campground is moderately challenging but manageable with proper preparation and the right vehicle. For specific directions, check with local forest service or BLM offices before your trip.
