Guacamole Trailhead Camping

Wild horses roam the open range while coyotes call through the night at this BLM camping area that serves as the trailhead for the Guacamole mountain biking trail system. Located on BLM land near Virgin, Utah, the campground sits atop a mesa accessible via a graded gravel road that becomes steep and narrow in the final half-mile stretch.

Campers find dispersed sites both in the open with mountain views and tucked among pinyon-juniper trees, each with established fire rings. The road challenge keeps crowds manageable—Thomas R. found the area "completely alone" overnight, though ATV riders pass through during daylight hours. Cell service varies significantly by carrier, with T-Mobile users reporting no connection while Verizon provides limited coverage.

The steep access road poses real challenges for larger rigs, though reviewers report seeing various vehicle types including RVs that managed the climb. Campers should bring their own firewood as none is available on-site. Free-roaming cattle add to the open-range atmosphere, and mountain bikers use this as a staging area for trail access. For those seeking more camping near Virgin, several dispersed options exist in the surrounding area.

This spot works well for self-sufficient campers comfortable with primitive conditions and steep road access who want proximity to mountain biking trails.

Campers regularly cited the scenic mountain views and flexible camping options among trees or in open areas. Many mentioned the challenging but manageable access road. Some feedback indicated late-night ATV noise issues.

Top Spot

A prime spot. We were completely alone with our camper van overnight. During the day, two or three ATV riders lame by. During the day, we saw wild horses, and at night, we heard coyotes. Plenty of spots—either in the open with a great view of the mountains or among the trees. Plenty of campfire sites. We really enjoyed the night. However, we didn't have an internet connection with T-Online. Access is via a gravel road and is easily manageable even with a 2WD vehicle.

Great campsite with trees, fire pits, and a great view!

Great Campsite with trees and fire pits. You even have a great view. Also there is open range cows wondering.

No wood for fire pit, bring your own. No T-Mobile serves (both signal and data) Very limited Verizon serves (2 bars & LTE data)

Road was scary at the end but great spot

We drove in on our 2wd camper van and the last .75 miles was scary with steep inclines and curves. Once we got to the top we couldn’t complain. A few other cars drove in about an hour after us, plenty of space for us all. Some people riding ATVs when we arrived.

Great view!

Busy area but several sites are available. 4 stars because ATVs were running at 1AM. Road is well maintained but bumpy as others have noted. Our 2W drive campervan did just fine.

Wonderful

This is a great spot, not far from town. The drive up is bumpy, but I saw all Mamés of vehicles, including RVs pulling. Got there on a Fri pm, the weekend wasn’t that busy, more people came in on Tuesday. Everyone there was polite or private. Very nice trip.

Awesome spot

Yeah the road is pretty rough, but I saw lots of vehicles with low clearance camped at the top. Great view of the stars and overall great view for camping. The van made it with ease! We liked how laid back it was. Definitely will return.

Guacamole mtb area

Mtb trailhead for the Guacamole trail system. The road in is graded but last 1/2 mile is very very steep and narrow and not a recommended climb or descent for TT and RVs! Camping is in PJ trees at top and farther in on old roads to west rim in the PJ.
