Buckskin Gulch Dispersed

Free dispersed camping along House Rock Valley Road puts campers within a short drive of Buckskin Gulch, one of the longer slot canyon hikes in the Colorado Plateau region. The BLM manages eight numbered sites along this road, and stopping at the Kanab Field Office before heading out is worth the time since staff can provide current road conditions and site availability. No reservation is needed. Toilets are on-site, and campfires and pets are permitted.

Road conditions are the most critical planning factor here. The surface can shift to deep sand near the trailhead, and at least one camper found it impassable for a van, pulling over at a turnout about 0.3 miles short. High-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles have more flexibility. Site 8, near the valley wall at roughly 4.3 miles from the highway, sits on a spur road past a cattle guard and provides more wind protection and privacy than sites closer to the road. One trade-off: a petroglyph trail begins just beyond that site, so weekend mornings bring foot traffic through camp.

The slot canyon hike itself runs 21 miles and typically has water in the wash, so water shoes are recommended. Day-use fees apply for the hike, $6 per vehicle and $6 per dog, separate from the free camping. Brent E. describes the area as "quite quiet, not much traffic through the night or day," which holds true on weekdays.
