Free and drive-in accessible, Tomsich Butte TH sits on BLM land within the Manti-La Sal National Forest and requires a capable 4x4 to reach. The final three-quarter mile descent to the trailhead is steep but not technical. Parking is limited to one or two spots, with additional pull-offs along the descent that can fill quickly. Campfires, pets, and alcohol are all permitted. Campers who want similar free dispersed options in the region can browse campsites near Emery or check nearby trailhead camps like Quandry Canyon Trailhead to the southeast.
Description
Riddled with old mine shafts from the uranium boom times, the Butte is right across the Muddy River from Hondu Arch. A put-in for rafting when there is water in the Muddy, the area has many dispersed camping possibilities. Finishing Reds Canyon Loop whichever way you didn’t cover to get here will make you wonder why it isn’t all a national park.
