Road 1280 East of Torrey Utah

BLM Land managed by the Richfield Field Office includes this dispersed camping area along Road 1280, roughly two miles east of Torrey, Utah, where red rock formations provide open sightlines across the high desert landscape. The area is free to use, with no reservations required, and sits on easily traveled dirt road that smaller vehicles, camper vans without high clearance, and RVs up to 40 feet have all navigated without difficulty.

Spaces here are numerous. Campers report that the sites keep appearing the further back you drive, with homemade fire rings scattered throughout and enough separation between groups that the area rarely feels crowded. During one recent stay, no more than four or five other groups were present at any time. Wind can be significant, and at least one camper had to extinguish a fire that restarted overnight, so extra care with fire management is worth noting. Rocky ground makes staking a tent a challenge; using nearby rocks to anchor guy lines is a common workaround.

Verizon cell coverage is reportedly solid for the area. No utilities, trash service, or bathrooms are available, so campers need to plan accordingly. Nearby options include Overlook Point Dispersed Site to the northwest and Beas Lewis Flat Dispersed to the north for those comparing dispersed sites in the corridor. As Melinda B. notes, the area is "not crammed and spacious," which makes it a good match for self-sufficient campers who want room to spread out near Capitol Reef country.

Quiet with views & stars

Fantastic dispersed camping area with stunning g views of the surrounding red rock formations and dark skies for star gazing. There is tons of space, especially the further back you drive. Camper van without high clearance had no trouble.

Great dispersed camping with good views

Easily traveled dirt road in. I drive and F250 but there were multi smaller vehicles and RVs. Great views a good amount of wind so be careful with your fires. I had to put mine out again at 2am because it restarted. Hard to put tent stakes in the ground due to rocks so I just used the rocks the hold it down.

Quiet and a lot of spots

Easy to find a spot. Have homemade fire rings if wanted. Very quiet and a large area to camp. Not crammed and spacious. No utilities, bathrooms, trash. But quiet and safe. Gorgeous sunrise and sunset

Lots of space!

This side of the BLM land is just south of the two when you enter the dispersed area. There are TONS of spaces to camp, so many that when we were looking we eventually stopped and turned around because they just kept going! We have stayed in this area the last 2 nights and we have not seen more than 4-5 other groups camping at one time. There are a decent amount of trees that provide shade/wind breaks and plenty of fire pits to find a spot for you. Internet connection is pretty good for Verizon.
