Sitting at the edge of the Bonneville Salt Flats just off I-80 near Wendover, Rishel Mountain Dispersed Sites occupies BLM land on the slopes above one of Utah's most recognizable stretches of high desert. The area gives campers open sightlines toward the salt flats and, on clear nights, a wide view of the sky. No fees apply. Access is drive-in, though visitors report long stretches of washboard road and minor ruts on the approach.
The dispersed setup means multiple site options spread across the terrain, with no formal facilities on-site. Bathrooms are available near the I-80 exit. Verizon coverage is described as fair. One camper who spent a full week here noted the site works well for photography, recommending arrival close to sunset and departure after sunrise to catch the best light. Positioning behind the mountains helps reduce light pollution from Wendover when shooting stars.
Nearby, Rishel Peak BLM Dispersed — Silver Island Mountains sits roughly a quarter mile west, and Dispersed Site at the Base of A Hill - BLM is about a half mile north, giving the broader area several free camping clusters. Wind can be a factor. As Benjamin puts it, the area has "many sites to choose and trails to ride." The campground suits photographers, overlanders, and anyone using the corridor as a base for exploring the salt flats.
