Managed by the Bureau of Land Management as part of the campgrounds near BLM Land — Salt Lake Field Office, Silver Island Mountains by Bonneville Salt Flats sits along the Silver Island Mountains backcountry byway near Wendover, Utah, where the terrain slopes visibly toward the white expanse of the salt flats. The highway is visible from camp, though multiple reviewers note that road noise is minimal once the sun goes down. Cell coverage is solid here, with both Verizon and AT&T users reporting three or more bars.
Sites are spread out across open, exposed ground with no shade to speak of. The layout gives campers plenty of room between rigs, and the gravel roads are generally accessible to most vehicles, though some sections run washboard and everything tilts toward the flats, so leveling a rig takes a little extra work. Jason puts it plainly: "Site is very quiet but the flies before sundown are crazy." Bug spray does not appear to help much, but the insects reportedly clear out after dark.
Crowd levels vary. On a rainy Tuesday in May, one visitor counted close to 20 vehicles. Holiday weekends draw larger groups. The site is free, which likely contributes to the traffic. Campers passing through on a single night tend to find it convenient rather than destination-worthy, while those who stay longer often make the short drive to Bonneville Salt Flats, which is worth the side trip.
The ground is hard-packed, so tent campers should bring extra padding and a mallet for stakes. A free dump station is available at the Maverick at exit 410 in Wendover. Nearby alternatives include Leppy Pass Road BLM Dispersed — Salt Flats and BLM Site next to Salt Flats, both within a short distance for campers who want to compare options in the area before settling in.
If you are crossing the Great Basin and need a free, no-reservation overnight stop with functional cell service and open sightlines toward both the mountains and the flats, this one is worth pulling off for.
