Dispersed Camping

Leeds Canyon Dispersed #1

Leeds Canyon Dispersed #1, near Hurricane, Utah, is a rugged spot for those who appreciate the beauty of nature without the frills of traditional campgrounds. This area offers free camping with stunning views, making it a popular choice for tent campers and smaller RVs.

The sites are spread out along a well-maintained gravel road, providing a sense of privacy despite being close to the main road. Visitors have noted that while the views are breathtaking, the proximity to the road can bring some noise from passing vehicles. As one camper mentioned, “It has beautiful views and a place to put up a hammock,” which highlights the area’s charm.

For those looking to explore, Leeds Canyon is a short drive from hiking trails and other outdoor activities. Campers have enjoyed the nearby Leeds Creek, perfect for a quick dip or relaxing by the water. Just remember, this location doesn’t offer amenities like drinking water or trash disposal, so be prepared to pack out what you bring in.

While some campers found the road a bit tricky for larger rigs, many appreciated the spaciousness of the sites and the chance to connect with fellow campers. If you’re after a peaceful escape with gorgeous scenery, Leeds Canyon Dispersed #1 is worth checking out.

looks nice but few spots for travel trailer-best for vans/tents

We went with 26ft trailer mid march.  As someone else mentioned it is good for rv only on the first four or so.  After that we wondered how we were going to turn around.  Spoke with blm guy and he said the gate was probably locked after the kiln this early in the year but we should be able to turn around there.  If looking to dry camp I would look elsewhere or drop trailer first and go in with truck to see if anything is available.

Close To The Road

This isn't the greatest of the Leeds Canyon Designated Dispersed sites, but we were happy to get anything at all. We drove all the way to site #7/8 before turning around. One of the sites (7 or 8) was occupied, the other was free, and they are definitely separated, but it still felt like we'd be crowding the camper so we opted to turn back. The road definitely gets sketchy (and cell service gets weak ) after site #6, though we managed in our 26ft class c. Wouldn't really recommend any huge rigs.

All the sites were taken, but when we were heading out this site (#1) was free on our way out (we think a car was just using it as a parking spot when we passed it the first time) so we grabbed it.

It's a bit too close to the road, and there are a bunch of cars going along the road to the hiking trail just past this spot, but for a Saturday afternoon we were glad to find something.

Cell service is ok, att seems to be better than the Verizon phone, but there is a signal. weBoost isn't helping the Verizon phone much.

Fun surprise: we met fellow Dyrt reviewer Greg L boondocking just up the road! Nice to meet someone from here in person.

Free Camping and Views

Only thing good was the views, and you can camp for 14 days. Other than that road was annoying. Spots are next to dirt road, and don’t bother going to the campground at the end of the road $5 bucks a night not bad but there were only like 3 spots, pointless. Your better off finding dispersed near Zion. No fires at my time of arrival. Makes it lame without campfires. All in all good reception AT&T getting 1-2 bars. Wouldn’t recommend unless you just need a place to crash for like 1 night. Nice scenery though, the bluffs.

Happy place

Gravel road to the sites was well maintained, but sometimes narrow. Campsite was spacious for our 25’ Class C Winnebago View. Site “4040” had a few fire pits. It has beautiful views and a place to put up a hammock. It was only a 1-2 block walk to Leeds Creek to sit on a rock and soak feet in creek. “Children’s Forest at the Kiln” maybe 1/4 mile down from site. A sweet little trail leading to a historical kiln. The only negative would be solely blamed on Humans.. “LEAVE NO TRACE” pick up your trash! I picked up a full bag of booze bottles, trash, Easter candy & tons of broken glass and dishes, tp. You get the idea. Please leave better than you found it. Thank you 👏

Decent and mostly quiet

Right off the road so you’ll hear plenty of vehicles. But far from other campsites so you’ll get a private sense. Has some cell coverage. Has a fire ring. Managed to fit several small vehicles, plenty of flat ground.

Good but busy

It was a beautiful area but it was so hard to find a spot I actually had to stay a night down on the st George path of the mountain and come back around a few times the next day to find this one empty. Good cell service I have ATT and a gorgeous view. Night time since you’re on the main road can get bright and a little noisy and I had a few people walk through my area, however the view makes it worth it. If you can’t find a spot if you head past the original turn in and go towards where it says st George there are a few other unmarked sites but they have fire pits to distinguish. That side gave me no service at all however.

Dispersed site

Leeds Canyon Dispersed camp sites are on the Dixie NF. Lower dispersed sites 1-6 are easiest to get into with a TT. Camp in designated spots, camping free for 16 days. No water, no trash, no toilets. Sites are along a well maintained FS gravel road so dust may be a concern. Only a few miles outside of Leeds and Interstate 15.

Site #1 has a back in angle that needs you to be heading back down the road..if a TT.
