Free dispersed camping on BLM land, Haycock Ranch Road sits just off Hole in the Rock Road about 5 miles southeast of Escalante. Campers access the area by turning right immediately after leaving the paved highway, finding themselves on a plateau with numerous sites spread across roughly half a mile of open terrain.
The camping area offers expansive views across the surrounding desert landscape, with sites positioned along ridges and scattered throughout the plateau. Wind picks up frequently here, and Christine Z. notes "Area was clean and good cell service." Several reviewers mention securing tents and gear against dust kicked up by both wind and traffic on the main road. Sites closer to the road experience more dust from passing vehicles and ATVs, while those positioned further out provide more isolation.
The area accommodates RVs up to 36 feet, though road conditions vary. Water runoff creates long ruts that challenge low-clearance trailers, and the further you venture from the entrance, the rougher the access becomes. Rock fire rings mark established sites, and two dumpsters sit near the entrance for trash disposal. No water, restrooms, or other facilities exist here.
Mark K. describes the "Night sky was AMAZING" due to minimal light pollution. Cell service works well for both AT&T and Verizon users, with speeds reaching 8 Mbps reported. The location provides convenient access to Devil's Garden trail just 10 minutes down Hole in the Rock Road and serves as a base for exploring slot canyons throughout Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
Summer temperatures climb into the mid-90s with little shade available, making spring and fall more comfortable for camping. Bring extra water and prepare for dusty conditions regardless of season.
