Sitting just off Highway 24 in Fishlake National Forest, Cooks Mesa Trailhead Dispersed gives free access to open mesa terrain within easy range of Capitol Reef National Park. The entry road is bumpy but manageable without four-wheel drive, and the area spreads out enough to accommodate roughly 10 to 15 sites across the flats and into the hills. Campers who explore further from the highway entrance find spots tucked between low hills that cut down on road noise, though semis and other large vehicles on Highway 24 are audible from the closer sites.
Cell coverage is a practical draw here. Multiple reviewers confirm workable signal from both T-Mobile and Verizon, which is worth noting for anyone planning a longer stay near Capitol Reef. Shade is limited across most of the area, though a few sites have a tree or two. Several of the fire rings are built against large rocks, which provides useful wind shelter. Cortlan S. notes you can "hike up the hills for some great sunset and sunrise view points," and the elevated terrain does face west across open country.
Nearby, Capitol Reef National Park Dispersed Camping and Dispersed Camping Route 24 round out the free options along this corridor. Campers should pack out their trash, as some sites show residual litter. This spot works well for van travelers, trailer rigs, and anyone using the area as a base for hiking or a quick overnight stop along the Highway 24 route.
