Reaching Oaks Park Campground requires a long drive on gravel Forest Service roads, so campers with low-clearance vehicles should plan accordingly. Set within Ashley National Forest in the Flaming Gorge area of Wyoming, this free, nine-site campground operates June through September and has no reservation system. No pets are permitted. Site 10 functions as a group area and has drawn equestrian users, which means flies and horse waste can be a factor near that spot.
The campground sits close to Oaks Park Lake, though the lake is a draw-down water source and water levels can leave the shoreline looking sparse. A few sites are positioned closer to the water if visitors drive past the main designated area to the left. Site layout is mostly small back-in spots, though a handful of pull-throughs can accommodate larger trailers. Crowd density tends to stay low, with reviewers rarely encountering more than one or two other groups at a time.
Facilities are minimal. One vault toilet is on-site, but there is no potable water and no trash service, so campers need to pack out everything they bring in. Cell coverage is unreliable here despite the listed amenity. Greg L. notes it plainly: "no water or trash." Nearby alternatives include Ashley National Forest Oaks Park Campground about half a mile north, and Windy Park Camping Area roughly a mile and a half northwest. This campground makes the most sense for self-sufficient campers comfortable with pack-in, pack-out conditions and unpaved road access.
Description
There are 11 campsites on the south shore of large and lovely Oaks Park Reservoir. There is a pump handle well on the west shore of the reservoir. __Trails lead north from the lake, and the area is open to OHV use. A trail leads south from the campground to the Big Brush Creek Cave. If you are interested in caving, please contact the Forest Service.
