Crowded but didn’t feel crowded
First time there. Compared to other state parks in other states this was very packed with mainly RV’s. The lake is pretty but goes from waist high to bottomless blue with lots of boats speeding past. So expect to swim with eyes in the back of your head. Despite this, it had a chill and relaxing vibe. No bugs when we were there. Nice shop near the day use area with rentals. For what it was and the number of people, it’s nice. It’s not wilderness but it is rural.
Busy, Crowded Campground
Full transparency—we did not stay at this campground but only drove through it as research for future trips. What we saw on a sunny Saturday in July did not tempt us to return. This is a large state park on a beautiful inland lake. There are several camping areas within the campground, and they are large and wooded. However, sites are packed close together and the campground was wall to wall vehicles. Perhaps this was because it is a popular boating area, and extra vehicles are needed to pull the boats. They are parked in a side parking lot within the campground area. Many RV owners don’t mind being surrounded by other RVs, but if you are a tent camper or drive a small Class B, this might not be for you, at least at the height of the summer season.
Large State Park on a beautiful inland lake.
This is one of our families favorite places to camp. Higgins lake is beautiful. The water is less than waist deep for about 100 yards out and then drops off to about 90' deep. The water color is amazing when the sun is out. There is a massive boat launch in a protected lagoon. The campground has about 400 sites. There are a few sites with full hook-ups. some of the sites are difficult to get into once you get up into the trees away from the water front. Getting a site here during the summer can be very difficult. You will want one of the sites closer to the lake. If you want one of these sites, you will need to be ready to book the site 6 months in advance. There is also a camp store that sells ice cream and homemade pizza.
Beautiful Park
One of my favorite parks in Michigan. Beautiful beaches and always a fun week during Harvest Fest!
Amazing gem!
We’ve been to this campground twice and each time we had an amazing time. The bathrooms are clean. The beach is clean and the water clear. The beach is great for kids to play in safely while the parents chill at the shore. Fellow campers have super helpful both times we’ve been there. This park is a great place for a yearly family trip.

Great campground on a great lake!
Stayed here before the 4th of July for the weekend and was really impressed with the facilities and size of spaces at the campground. For being such a busy campground (since there is a boat launch) the sites are still quite large! We were able to fit 2 large tents, a small tent, 2 cars, 1 boat trailer and a sun shade for our gear with plenty of room to spare.
The restrooms (which I am told were recently renovated) were very clean.
The beaches were well maintained and plenty of space to moor boats overnight.
In addition to the boat launch there is also a camp store down the road with tons of snacks, camping gear/utensils, and Higgins lake souvenirs.
I will definitely return again! Be sure to catch a sunset from the campground beaches, you won’t regret it!
If you aren't familiar with this lake it is extremely clear (see video) and very large, there are 2 sandbar areas which are very popular providing 3-4 feet water to hangout in.
Great place
Clean beach. Great for boating. Busy camping but awesome lake to be on.
Friendly people
Neighbors were very friendly. Had a great time camping here.
Beautiful
Water is very beautiful! Gets very very crowded though. They have a really nice Halloween weekends.
beautiful lake, crowded dirty camp
we love Higgins lake, it’s clear, shallow and great for a family with small children. the campground was crowded, loud, and so dirty.
Soon to be repeat visitors. Gorgeous lake!
We stayed in the East loop of the campground and were by the boat launch which was very convenient because we could put in and leave our boat in overnight! There are 2 bathhouses (bathrooms with separate showers), the one bathroom was much nicer than the other. The lake is absolutely gorgeous. Theres another very shallIow lake maybe a mIle down the road that we took oIr kayaks to and was perfect fIr them! We liked the lake and campground so much we booked another weekend for the end of the summer!
Our favorite place!
We spend several weekends at this campground and love it. On holiday weekends we camp further away from the boat launch, as it gets extremely busy! Try to get a full hook up site if you can.....no line to dump on your way out!
