Reedsburg Dam State Forest Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Reservations are available at this drive-in state forest campground in Merritt, Michigan, where sites run $20 per night and the campground stays open year-round. Arriving campers now need to scan a QR code on-site or call the state park office to get a permit before setting up, a process reviewers describe as straightforward once you know to expect it. The layout follows a cul-de-sac style, with sites spaced well apart and enough trees at most spots to support a hammock. RVs up to 40 feet can fit, and site 29 has accommodated at least one 30-foot fifth wheel without issue.

Water access is a defining feature here. Most sites sit near the shoreline with direct sightlines to the water, and small fishing access points are common along the edges. Anglers and paddlers return regularly, with multiple reviewers noting consistent fishing and kayaking on the water adjacent to the dam. Wildlife sightings, including otters and bald eagles, have been reported by visitors who have camped here across different seasons. The dam itself is walkable from camp. Noise can be a factor: early morning fishing activity and, during hunting season, nearby waterfowl hunters are part of the experience at this location.

Facilities are rustic but functional. A pump well provides drinking water, vault toilets are on-site, and Josh B. notes that "T-Mobile service is decent." Pets are welcome, campfires are allowed, and alcohol is permitted. The campground sits within the Cadillac State Forest Area, where camping near Cadillac State Forest Area spans a range of options across the region. Campers wanting lakeside amenities with hookups might consider Houghton Lake Travel Park Campground a few miles to the southeast.

Campers regularly cited the large, clean waterfront sites with excellent spacing and scenic views. However, noise from early fishermen, hunters, and sometimes disruptive campers can affect the peaceful atmosphere.

Good fishing

Tons of fishing spots and trails around to ride. We come every summer with kids and they love to fish and head into town and find things to do. Its a rustic campground so no hookup. You do have to scan a code when arriving or call the state park office to get a permit before you set up! This was new to us this year but wasnt too hard to get done! We have a 30 ft 5th wheel and we fit beautifully on site 29. Most sites seem to have a small fishing access along the water and some sort of view of the water.

Great

Been here many times! Great place to stay, no hookups but has a pump well and vault bathrooms. Great for fishing kayaking. I’ve seen otters swimming and bald eagles flying around on a regular. I think I’ve been here every month out of the year over the past 25 years or so. Also T-Mobile service is decent.

Nice, but rowdy

Large sites on an awesome place to fish and kayak.

It's a shame that the experience was ruined by loud and rowdy campers. They shot fireworks off well into the morning... played loud music and were screaming.

Good campground

It’s been a tradition passed down that some stay at the Reedsburg dam that’s just down the road from Merritt Speedway. The drive is easy enough and close enough to both the track and town. Always satisfied with our camping there.

Campground

Quiet rustic campground. Most sites have waterfront with pretty views. The campsites are very large and clean. The Dam was under construction so not sure what it is typically like but the water wasn’t very nice for swimming where we were on site 6. Just a short drive to Houghton or Higgins lake.

Locals Rec Place

I stayed at this campground overnight, and had an overall great stay. The campground is well spaced out in a cultisack style. Space between sites was aplenty and there were plenty of trees around most sites to make hamocking easy. I found a beautiful site, lots of room, with a great view of the water. The downside is that well before 7:09 a.m. I woke up to some fisherman about 20 feet from my tent. Next came a round of goose hunters who let off several rounds multiple times. This seems to be a busy spot for local fish and fowl lovers. Vault toilets were cleans, everything seemed well kept. The dam here was nice to walk to, I forgot to take pics though.
