Wind sweeps across the elevated bluffs at Blue West Campground, where sites perch on cliffs overlooking Lake Meredith. This National Park Service campground operates year-round with free primitive camping, though pets are not permitted. The paved road leads to dirt access routes that become challenging when wet, as multiple campers have noted.
Each of the ten-plus sites includes a covered pavilion with two picnic tables and bear-proof trash cans. Vault toilets serve the area and double as tornado shelters, reflecting the campground's location in tornado alley. No water, showers, or fire rings are available, and current fire restrictions often apply across the region. Cell service reaches the area with moderate strength.
The elevated position provides expansive lake views but limits water access compared to other locations around the reservoir. Jim clarifies that Blue West "does NOT have access to the water. No docks, no ramps, no water for filling." Boat launches and direct lake access require driving to other areas within the recreation complex.
Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees with minimal shade outside the pavilions. Aggressive insects emerge at dusk but settle once darkness arrives. The campground typically remains uncrowded, offering solitude for those seeking space away from busier lake areas. For additional options, campers can explore camping spots near Fritch or other campsites near Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.
