Pine trees shade most sites at this KOA, creating natural barriers between neighbors while maintaining easy access for RVs up to 70 feet. The hilly terrain requires levelers, but Donna H. notes the facilities are "clean and comfortable" with "the cleanest bathrooms I've seen on this trip." Recent site modifications removed every other campsite, leaving more spacious areas with dedicated vehicle parking.
The campground operates seasonally from May through September, serving as a staging point for Black Hills exploration. Mount Rushmore sits 30 minutes away, with Crazy Horse Memorial and Custer State Park equally accessible. Wind Cave National Park also lies within easy driving distance. The on-site café serves breakfast, and a pool provides relief during summer heat. Laundry facilities and a dog area accommodate longer stays.
Full hookups include electric, water, and sewer connections, plus a dump station for those needing it. WiFi coverage proves inconsistent according to multiple reviews, with password issues affecting remote work capabilities. Deluxe sites feature poured concrete pads, built-in grills, fire pits, and furnished seating areas. Gary S. found "sites are amongst trees, easy in/out" even during heavy rain.
Tent campers find grass sites along the back section of the property, away from RV traffic. The town of Custer provides hardware stores and groceries within a short drive. Staff assistance extends to booking issues and site selection guidance. For those exploring the broader region, campgrounds around Custer offer additional options.
Reservations are recommended during peak summer months when families visit the monuments. The combination of full amenities and central location makes this a practical base camp for multi-day Black Hills itineraries.
