      West Branch State Park Campground

Great overnight close to Ohio Turnpike

We were passing through on a weeknight in mid September. Many open sites. Sites are paved and many are sloped. Most are shaded. Our site #41 was fairly level with electricity. Close to huge bathhouse with flush toilets, showers and laundry. High above the lake with views through the trees. Appeared there were many long term campers but just as good for our short overnight stay. Online registration. $45 for electric only site.

      Oil Creek Family Campground

      Relaxing and Enjoyable

Stayed here right after Labor Day - very few other campers.   Campsites were large and gave privacy - easy to park.   Plenty of activities - hiking, frisbee golf, swimming, horseshoes, basketball, maze and a playground.   Clean sites - they do a great job of keeping up on the property.     AT&T cell phone service was weak - one bar most of the time.   Close to bike trails along Oil Creek.   A lot of great history to explore in both Titusville and Oil City.   Shopping for food just 10 minutes down the road.   Great customer service on arrival - gave us options for sites and let us explore before choosing even after we arrived about 15 minutes until the office was supposed to close.

      Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

      Relaxing and peaceful

Mosquito Lake gets a bad rap because of its name. We had such a great time launching our kayak from our campsite! I’ve attached a highlighted map marked with the sights on or very close to the water to launch a kayak. Additional kayak launch sites available around the park if you can’t get one of these. It’s great campground if you have kids or a dog. Plenty of great playgrounds and a dog park/dog beach. The camp host was very nice and welcoming. The wash house has laundry and showers. Everything was clean.

      Headwaters Park

      Campsite A

Had a nice stay at the Camp Site A tent site, which they label as their ADA Accessible site.

Overall me and the kids had a really nice time hanging atbthe site and exploring around the lake. Lots of friendly people too.

      Pros:

      • Tent site was generally good with a picnic table and fire pit on-site
      • Pull in parking right next to the campsite (which seems to be true for all tents and leantos)
      • Great walkable area with lots to explore with the kids
      • A few nice things just a 10min drive away like the Eagle Park splash park and playground and the cute Burton town square.
      • Tons of birds for all my bird watchers
      • Right at the entrance to the tent site area and right next to the restrooms
      • Sometimes people bring horses down there for a walk
      • Can't see other campers tent from your site (which i like because Im out here to get away from people)

      Cons:

      • Being right next the restrooms and tent area entrance is a higher traffic area. Didn't bother us much but could get annoying if woken up by a late night driver or door slam
      • The stump on the tent site has a snake in it. Didn't bother us at all, only saw it once as it was slithering away, but thought other might like to know.
      • Toilet was out of hand sanitizer

      FAQ:

      • No electic
      • No plumbing or showers (it is basically an outhouse)

      Mercer-Grove City KOA

      Nice campground

Nice campground! They hold lots of random activities for kids like tie dying, tractor ride, etc. We stayed in spot 24, which is very spacious, but I did not like the fact that it’s right next to the road where cars are speeding by. I do not think this spot in particular would be good if you have small children

Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

Large Campground in the middle of nowhere

Many sites on the lake. Old facilities. It eas humid and had rained (thunder storm). Quiet. Typical eastern usa camping with thick canopy of trees, mosquitoes. Site 80 was more open, and on a cul de sac. Gravel pad with a 2-3 degree slant. Lots of critters about.

      Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

      Discriminate against car camping

I've heard there are campgrounds that discriminate against car camping, first time experiencing it. There are many sites where people have a LARGE camper, a car, and multiple tents spread out over a large area. We have 2 SUV's with tents that attach to the backs. We followed all the rules and are taking up about HALF of our site. We were told that is not allowed. When asked for reasoning and comparing to what we've seen around the park, we get no clear answer that makes sense. We are here with a group that rented about 20 sites. After spending 4 hours setting everything up, she says one may have to leave; she's waiting to hear from her boss. I will definitely never return here!

      Harts Content Campground

      The showers were… functional.

Stayed one night while visiting friends. The campground was nice but could use some updating. It was definitely geared more towards families with small children. The showers were interesting. In the men’s they had a pull cord and a button in the women’s. Hot water was more of a mild suggestion rather than an actual thing you got. Luke warm was a generous way of describing it. Not a bad campground if you have a reason to be in the area for a night, but I would recommend it for long stayed unless your camper is very self contained.

      Kalyumet Campground

      Excellent place to stay!

Clean campground, water, electric. Saw a turkey upon arrival and a deer and multiple black squirrels when departing. Nice little store with arcade, snacks and pizza they will deliver to your site on Fridays! Heated pool and pretty nice bathrooms

    Guide to Mercer

Mercer, Pennsylvania camping areas span across eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania where the Appalachian foothills create varied terrain at elevations between 900-1,200 feet. The region experiences distinct four seasons with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F, while spring and fall bring significant temperature fluctuations requiring adaptable camping gear. Most campgrounds in the area remain open April through October, with limited winter camping options.

    What to do

Hiking trails access: West Branch State Park Campground offers numerous hiking paths through wooded terrain. "There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch. Bridal trails are located on Esworthy Rd," notes Alisa G., who appreciates the diverse trail options surrounding the lake.

Kayaking on peaceful waters: Two Mile Run County Park provides excellent kayaking opportunities on its quiet lake. "The lake is nice for canoeing," explains Kemberly S., highlighting the calm waters perfect for paddlers of all skill levels.

Fishing opportunities: Berlin Lake Wildlife Area offers abundant fishing access directly from campsites. "Nice boat dock! Love the lake front sites! And excellent price!" shares Sami Jo L., emphasizing how the direct water access enhances the fishing experience.

Archery practice: Mosquito Lake State Park maintains dedicated archery facilities for camping visitors. "We like to bring our bows and use the archery range," mentions Karen D., describing one of the unique recreational options beyond standard camping activities.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Breakneck Campground offers secluded camping areas, particularly the creek-side sites. "We chose one of two primitive sites next to a small creek. Apart from the campers above us on top of the hill, we were a few hundred feet from the other primitive sites. Despite being just a minutes walk from our truck, we felt incredibly secluded," explains Ben, highlighting the privacy factor.

Clean facilities: Jellystone Park at Kozy Rest maintains exceptionally clean restroom facilities. "Great campground and very clean. Probably the cleanest shower house I have ever seen at a campground," states John M., emphasizing the high standards of cleanliness.

Waterfront access: Campers consistently praise the direct lake access at several locations. "We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite," shares Alisa G. about West Branch State Park, appreciating the convenience of immediate water access.

Family-oriented activities: Multiple organized events keep younger campers engaged. "Plenty of activities for the kids, arcade, fishing, and playground," notes Kevin D. about Rose Point Park, highlighting the variety of structured recreation options.

    What you should know

Reservation timing: West Branch State Park Campground requires advance planning. "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!" advises Alisa G., emphasizing the need for early booking, especially for premium locations.

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds have significantly uneven terrain. "We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches," explains Andrea F. about her West Branch State Park experience.

GPS navigation issues: Follow campground directions rather than GPS. "We use both the RV Garmin 890 & RV Trip Wizard and both had us doing some crazy side roads to get into the KOA. Be sure to use the park's directions for an easier drive in," warns Jen O. about Mercer-Grove City KOA.

Quiet hour enforcement varies: Enforcement of noise rules differs between locations. "I got about 2 hours of sleep Saturday night total, and the last time I was woken up my watch said 3:48 am. Clearly there is absolutely no enforcement of the quiet hours whatsoever," reports Sara K. about her Breakneck Campground stay.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Rose Point Park offers excellent play facilities. "This place is great if you want activities for the kids (Has a pool, arcade, etc)," explains Nicole M., highlighting the structured recreation options for children.

Swimming options: Berlin Lake Wildlife Area provides natural swimming opportunities. "Numerous fishing and open swimming opportunities (basically anywhere you want along the water)," notes Katie, explaining the flexibility for water recreation.

Biking-friendly terrain: Look for campgrounds with suitable biking paths. "Campground is flat and great for bike riding. Nice playground for kids," shares Heidi B. about Mosquito Lake State Park, pointing out how the terrain supports family cycling.

Nature exploration activities: Some parks offer specialized nature programs. "If your kids are 8 and under they'll love the nature playground and nets provided to catch critters," explains Joe F. about Mosquito Lake, describing the structured environmental education options.
