Cows, coyotes, and canyon views greet campers at this free dispersed area within Succor Creek State Natural Area, a remote stretch of high desert in southeastern Oregon. Getting here takes commitment: the access road is roughly 20 miles of washboarded gravel, and reviewers recommend airing down tires before making the drive. Once inside the canyon, the road forks into distinct camping zones, with dispersed spots north of the main campground sitting either riverside or against the canyon walls, some moderately screened from passing vehicles.
The site configuration varies by location. Sites near the creek give direct water access, though there is no potable water on-site and campers filter from the creek. The main area has a pit toilet and covered picnic tables at some sites. Farther south, near the BLM boundary, one pull-off sits on an open loop with a rock fire ring, unshaded and exposed to full sky, which makes it well-suited to solar charging or Starlink setups. No cell service reaches the area. Poison ivy grows thick in places, particularly north of the campground, so watch footing near the water.
Weekends draw crowds, but Kevin C. notes it stays "politely quiet" even when busy. The canyon walls frame open sightlines toward surrounding ridgelines, and the creek runs slowly through the lower sites. Campfires are allowed, and pets are welcome at no charge. Campers wanting developed facilities nearby can check Succor Creek State Natural Area, located 2.1 miles north, or Coral Lake BLM Dispersed near Atkins Butte for a different setting to the southwest.
