Succor Creek State Natural Area

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Managed by the Bureau of Land Management as part of the camping destinations near BLM Land — Vale Malheur Field Office, Succor Creek State Natural Area sits within a desert canyon in eastern Oregon where rock spires rise above a creek-fed corridor. Getting there requires roughly 20 miles of dirt and gravel road from the freeway, though multiple visitors report the surface is well maintained and manageable for most vehicles.

The canyon terrain gives campers access to creek-side hiking, cave exploration, and rock formations along the canyon walls. Sites are primitive and spread across mostly flat ground with limited shade, so summer visits can be hot. Rattlesnakes and thistles are present in the area, worth knowing before arriving with kids or dogs. Weekends draw enough visitors that finding a good site can take some effort, particularly around holidays.

No water, electricity, or trash services are available on-site, and there is no firewood to purchase. Vault toilets are provided. Campers consistently note the area stays clean. The Succor Creek State Natural Area Dispersed area 2.1 miles south provides additional primitive options if the main sites are full. "Out of this world views, it is a must see," notes Miah M., and the star-gazing and thunder egg hunting mentioned by other reviewers suggest the area rewards those who stay after dark. Pack all water, food, and fuel before leaving the highway.

Stunning location

Surprisingly beautiful area. Dirt road to get there is in good shape but is more than 10 miles. Area is more or less flat. Pit toilets. Some shade.

Gorgeous location, plenty of spots to set up

Really stunning location with plenty of spots to camp most of the time, although I can see it being hard to find a good spot during holiday weekends.

Getting there was great. It’s a 20 mile dirt and gravel road from the freeway and it’s pretty well maintained.

I didn’t see a single piece of trash anywhere on my last trip. I will be making another trip out soon.
