Fishing and lakeside access draw campers to Lake In The Woods, a US Forest Service campground set within Umpqua National Forest outside Idleyld Park, Oregon. Getting here requires roughly 18 miles of gravel, single-lane road, so high-clearance vehicles and patience are worth factoring into trip planning. The campground runs from May through October and accommodates RVs up to 35 feet.
Sites ring the lake, with some positioned close to the water and others offering more separation from neighbors. The lake itself is not particularly clear, but multiple visitors have noted it holds fish well enough for casual angling right from camp. Campers can also walk the full perimeter of the lake. Two trail systems branch off from the campground, one at the back and one near the entrance, both leading to waterfall destinations that reviewers consistently call worth the effort.
No running water is available on site. Bring your own. Flush toilets and fire pits are provided, and the campground is ADA accessible. Sites are first-come, first-served and not reservable, so arriving mid-afternoon on a weekend in summer can mean limited waterfront spots. Nearby, Hemlock Lake and Hemlock Meadows offer overflow options if Lake In The Woods fills. Pets are welcome, as are campfires. This campground works best for anglers, hikers, and campers comfortable with a long gravel approach who want direct lake access in a forested National Forest setting.
