Elkhorn Campground

Elkhorn Campground offers basic amenities in a primitive setting. Facilities include clean pit toilets and a hand pump for water (though the water may appear light brown and might not be suitable for drinking without treatment). The campground has no electrical hookups or dump stations. Multiple tent sites are available, some offering shade. Each campsite has its own designated area, and the entire facility is kept clean and well-maintained despite its remote location.

Elkhorn Campground is located in the Badlands of North Dakota along the Maah Daah Hey Trail. The campground sits in a valley surrounded by badlands terrain, offering a scenic and remote camping experience. To reach the campground, you'll need to travel approximately 35 miles on unpaved roads, so a vehicle with decent clearance or all-wheel drive capability is recommended for the journey.

Reservations are not required for Elkhorn Campground as it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground uses a self-registration system where you pay $6 per night (cash or check only) by placing payment in an envelope, dropping it in a collection box, and clipping the tag to your site number. The campground is typically not crowded, with visitors often finding multiple sites available to choose from upon arrival.
