Within the Little Missouri National Grassland, Custer Snow Camp operates as a US Forest Service campground in North Dakota's expansive prairie landscape. The facility sits approximately 6 miles east of Sentinel Butte in the Dakota Prairie National Grasslands system. Campers exploring the region can find campgrounds near Little Missouri National Grassland for additional options. The grassland setting provides open terrain with minimal tree cover, typical of this northern Great Plains environment. Winter access may be limited due to snow conditions in this area.
Description
Custer's Snow Camp was named for a unexpected snowstorm that dropped 6 inches of white sloppy snow on May 3, 1876 delaying Custer and his men for two days.
