San Jon Village Park Route 66

This municipal overnight parking area sits just off Interstate 40 in San Jon, providing free camping for travelers passing through eastern New Mexico. RVs up to 43 feet can navigate the park road and find level pull-through spots near picnic tables. The compact layout fills quickly, with campers arriving as late as 10:30 PM on weeknights to claim remaining spaces.

The park includes restrooms, though lighting inside requires bringing a flashlight for nighttime use. A small playground and updated facilities serve families making brief stops. Road noise from the nearby interstate carries into the camping area, but most overnight travelers find it manageable for a free stay. "Very worth it for a free stay!" notes one reviewer who appreciated the level sites and easy slide-out access.

Sites provide enough room for RVs to extend slides without blocking the roadway. A gas station within walking distance offers last-minute supplies. The area stays relatively clean, though thorny ground cover makes closed-toe shoes advisable when walking around camp. Logan offers additional places to camp around Logan for those exploring the region.

Plan to arrive early in the evening, as the limited number of spots can fill up during peak travel seasons.

Many campers appreciated this free overnight stop for its clean restrooms, family amenities, and convenient I-40 access. Some visitors expressed concerns about thorny ground stickers affecting pets and occasional noise from truck traffic.

Spacious & easy in-out

Stayed overnight in our 43' motorhome. Just off I-40, and easy to navigate. Plenty of places to pull off the park road and park near a picnic booth. Level sites --we only had to put our slides out and then good to go for the evening. Also, should add that there's enough room to pull off, put slides out, & be out of the roadway. Little bit of road noise but...meh. Very worth it for a free stay!

Good easy, clean, spot right off interstate

We stayed here one night on our way through NM. Was easy to get to and had plenty of space. It is a city park and has a new playground, picnic benches. It has a sign that says overnight stays are welcome.

Be careful with your dog

Nice overnight stop. However, be careful with your dog. Ours got goat head stickers in her paw and it was a lot of trouble to remove them. We also had to toss our throw rugs as they had too many to deal with.

Easy Access from I-40

Free overnight parking in a quiet and clean area near the I40 Exit. It has a small but updated playground and restrooms. There is a nearby Gas Station, too. It is a great stopping point for an overnight stay while traveling. We’ve stayed here twice now and have had no issues.

Thank you to the community for providing such a clean and well maintained space for free overnight parking. My children loved the playground, and I loved the free little library! We felt safe and area was well lit.

Convenient, Safe, Comfortable

We arrived in the daylight when several children were outside playing at the neighboring park. Several other RVs were here or pulling in also. Some highway noise but not bad. The park is clean and there is an Allsups at the corner for necessities. We were very comfortable here. Grateful for the resource!

Great Quick Pit Stop/animal friendly

We drove 6 hours and wanted to keep going but honestly I am so grateful we pulled off to this spot. It is off the 40, but it’s actually really peaceful and there are trees, a big grassy field, and a park. Also it has clean restrooms, no showers and a place to throw out trash. I have a cat too so I parked by the baseball field and had the whole field to ourselves, which my cat really enjoyed wondering around the old abandoned homes lol Anyway, great spot for a quickie, feels like your still in nature. And it is definitely animal friendly.

Noisy night

It’s always cool to see a town give overnight parking in their town parks. However the road directly in front is full of noisy all night truckers. There must be a mining pit nearby because they kept us up all night.

Great for Car Camping

Awesome and free overnight parking with picnic tables and clean bathrooms! Coming in and finding a spot may be a bit confusing but just know the majority of the spots you can park at are next to picnic tables and that should be an easy enough guide. Bring a flashlight or lantern with you to the toilet at night.

Good overnight place to sleep.

There is restrooms, but no lights inside, so take a flashlight at night. It is a tiny park so get there early as you can before it fills up. No hook-ups but good for a over-nighter since it's free. Don't wear sandals because there is thorny stickers galore.

Felt exposed but it works

I pulled up to a park looking for a campground only to realize that the park IS the campground. There are a few campers parked around here but im the only one who set up a tent. I feel a little exposed setting up and sleeping in a tent in a park right behind the gas station and across the street from some residential trailers but it’s the last camp spot in New Mexico before you hit Texas if you’re going east on I-40. The bathrooms are really clean. There’s streetlights that flood the park with a soft light and there are picnic tables. Not the best, but it works! It’s pretty windy. Best thing about it is it’s free.

June camping

Easy place to pull off of the I-40 for the night. Free and even has clean bathrooms. You can hear the trucks sometimes but other than that it's pretty quiet. Plenty of space to spread out. There's a gas station/market no more than a 5 minute walk from the camp site too. Super easy place to camp while traveling
