Jacks Creek Horse Camp

Reservations are not required at Jacks Creek Horse Camp as it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. However, the campground can fill up, especially on weekends and during peak summer months. Arriving early on weekdays gives you a better chance of securing a desirable site, particularly those with good tree coverage on the upper loop. For the best selection, consider arriving mid-week when turnover is higher. During busy periods, having a backup camping option is recommended.

Jacks Creek Horse Camp is located approximately 15 miles north of Pecos, NM on NM 63. From Santa Fe, you'll need to travel about 35-40 miles to reach the campground, making it an accessible getaway from the city. The drive typically takes around an hour, depending on traffic and weather conditions. This proximity makes it a convenient destination for Santa Fe residents looking for a weekend outdoor adventure in the Pecos Wilderness area.

Jacks Creek Horse Camp offers multiple units of corrals for horses, clean vault toilets that are well-maintained, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. The campground features ample parking with plenty of turnaround space for large trailers. Sites are arranged in two loops, with outside loop sites being more wooded and intimate, while inside loop sites are longer and designed to accommodate RVs. There's good tree coverage throughout much of the campground, providing shade and privacy at many sites.

Jacks Creek Horse Camp provides excellent access to the Pecos Wilderness trail system. The campground serves as an ideal "home base" for exploring numerous trails that branch out into the wilderness area. These trails are suitable for day rides or longer excursions, making the camp perfect for group trail exploration. The extensive trail network offers various difficulty levels and scenic routes through forests and mountains.
