The fishing ponds are just a quarter mile walk from the campsites, and access to the numerous trails throughout our 940-acre property is directly from the campsites. While we have four designated sites, it is rare for all to be full, and likely that you'll be the only campers here most days. We are located in a very remote/rural part of Illinois in a county nestled between the Mississippi& Illinois Rivers, but only 75 miles north of downtown St. Louis. We have been included in John Shirle's"The Best in Tent Camping: Illinois."
The McCully Heritage Project is a 940- acre environmental center located one mile south of Kampsville in beautiful and remote Calhoun County. We are a private non-profit left as the legacy of Howard and Eva McCully.

This is an older RV park and campground, and the age shows. We spent several nights here due to engine problems with our tow vehicle. The sites are level, and there is plenty of shade. (One advantage of being an older park.) But everything is just a little run down. The sites are gravel and close together do not much privacy. They come with water, sewer & electric. There is a pool (closed when we were there), playground, mini golf, a lake, game room, laundry and a small store with basics. The bathroom and showers were clean, but dated. Not all facilities were in working order. Two of 6 washers were out of service, one bathroom stall was out of order, pot holes in the road. There are also cabins, and RVs available to rent. There is quite a bit of traffic noise from I-44 and there are a lot of excess lights kept on all night long. The staff was friendly and check in was easy. Many of the sites are occupied be semi-permanent residents. They have internet, but it is weak and spotty. Saturday night they had a band making noise for 3 hours!

The location is just 15 minutes from downtown St Louis. Service was great and site came w power and water and sewer hookup. Showers were ok and they were clean. Pull through site was a life saver.

I stayed one night in the RV campsite. There was only one other camper. The grass had been mowed recently so the path around the pond was easily walkable.
Not many of the RV sites had fire rings and, with all of the fresh cut grass, it would have taken a lot of raking to make a spot safe for a fire anyway.

Lots of people who smoke. But the bathrooms are smoke free and we're clean.
Nights are noisy!!! About 3am sounded like a dump truck was driving through camp and lifting several dumpsters and backing up and doing it again. It wasn't really but it was that noisy.
Lots of longer term tenants. But everyone we bumped into were kind or just kept to themselves.
GuideLoved the campground! However, lesson learned to reserve a campsite further from the road. Great hiking trails. Fishing not so much. Scenic views. Easy plug n play electric on a 30 amp box, no issues with blowing fuses like I have at other big state parks. Clean vault toilets (I didn't like how people would drive into the park from the highway just to use the bathroom).. overall good stay though. I'll definitely go back!

We stayed there for a scout event. They had hot showers and bathroom which is always a plus. There was a little trash at the site but nothing bad.
We had a ton of room between us and others. We could choose our site. I appreciate that quiet hours were enforced.
TravelerThe online reservations were easy to make, and after talking to staff on the phone I found the website to be up to date. Staff were pleasant and the place is well kept. We got in at night, the night check in board was easy to find and the map showed us exactly our spot and the route to take to get to it. The stay was pleasant though there Is an airport nearby and steady traffic on the highway this is on. Check out? Just leave and it’s taken care of. I’ve never stayed at an easier place.

LegendI stayed here in June on a Tuesday night. The main pull-in parking area was completely empty. Has a ton of spots, most with their own fire ring. Some have some shade. There were also other more private pull-in spots where I saw only 2 other vehicles. There’s a little pond with wildlife like rabbits and frogs. You get there after about 5 miles on a well maintained, wide gravel road. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay!

ScoutStayed here for a quick weekend away. Facilities were nice and clean, and staff was very friendly. Mini golf, activity room with a pinball machine and pool table. A band played on Saturday night at the pavillion but unfortunately it was very cold and we didn't stay long. Sites were a little cramped, but we had a nice view of the pond. We were close to the playground though, which had bright lights at night and loud kids - I would avoid that area next time.

The way I came was a little weird with some awkward turns that might be tricky for a less experienced operator. At&t gets decent service.

GuideWe stopped despite the reviews as we just needed to sleep and did not plan to get out at all. The place is in terrible shape though there is goats and chickens running around which was kind of cool. Sketchy as prices weee not as posted on their website and they only take cash. Overhanging trees drag on vehicles. For our purposes it worked but I would not come here for anything else.
