Sleepy Hollow State Park, managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, centers its campground around Ovid Lake in Laingsburg, roughly 20 to 30 minutes from Michigan State University in East Lansing. The park runs two main camping loops, each with its own shower and restroom facility, and the sites themselves are asphalt-padded with picnic tables and fire rings at every site. This is one of only two campgrounds in the greater Lansing area with full hookups, which makes it a consistent draw for RV campers visiting the region.
Site quality varies noticeably depending on which area you book. The electric hookup posts are shared between multiple adjacent sites and positioned far enough from some pads that campers routinely need 100 feet of extension cord to reach them. The developed loops have good tree coverage, including walnut trees that drop heavily in fall, while some sites in the rustic section have been reported as sloped and poorly maintained, with little grass and significant poison ivy. Walk-in site F has drawn particular attention from tent campers: it sits roughly a mile from the parking area, can be reached by kayak across the lake, and includes hammock posts and a fire pit with open sightlines toward the night sky.
Activities are spread across a large footprint. The park has places to camp around Sleepy Hollow State Park that draw visitors for its disc golf course, mountain biking, horseback riding trails, a playground, a swimming beach, and a fishing pier on Ovid Lake, which is a no-wake lake well-suited to kayaking and canoeing. Canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards are available to rent. The beach is about a half mile from the main loops, and most campers drive rather than walk. "The restrooms are very clean and kept up," notes Mary T., and hot showers with good pressure are consistently mentioned across reviews.
Reservations are strongly recommended for weekends, as the campground fills quickly. There is no camp store on site, so stocking up beforehand matters. Supplies are available in Laingsburg or in Saint Johns, where a Walmart — Saint Johns Supercenter provides a full resupply option. The campground is open year-round, with nightly rates ranging from $20 to $160 depending on site type. It suits RV campers who need hookups near Lansing, families with kids, and paddlers who want lake access without a long drive.
Description
Located just 20 minutes north of Lansing, Sleepy Hollow State Park is an idyllic getaway for anyone needing some time away from the city. The 2,600 acre park is situation on Price Road off US-27 making it easily accessible to people passing through. That being the case, the park still maintains its charm and accommodates campers and visitors every day without issue. The Little Maple river can be found winding in and out of the forested geography, with Lake Ovid situated right in the heart, thanks to the clever placement of a dam. Visitors come from all over to enjoy the scenic landscapes, birdwatching opportunities, and Winter Snowshoeing.
During the Spring, camp rangers host the weekly Sleepy Hollow State Park Nature program, which educates campers about local wildlife and the history of the surrounding regions. This is a great opportunity for families to spend some time together, especially after a long day of hiking and camping.
Surprisingly, it’s during the winter that this park is most frequently attended. In fact, Sleepy Hollow is most recognized for the miles of snowshoeing and cross country skiing trails that run through the land. The trails are well-traveled, however there’s no shortage of privacy to get out and find peace and quiet within the confines of a forest muted by snow.
Camping here is easily accessible. Michigan Residents can utilize their State Park Recreation Passport to get in for free. Otherwise, entrance rates are $11 for residents, and $16 for non-residents. If camping, full-service campsites start at $25/night, while walk-in rustic sites are only $17/night. Furthermore, if camping in a tent doesn’t sound like your thing there are onsite cabins available for rent at $68 per night. If you want electricity and a full-service cabin, Deluxe Cabins can be rented for $101 a night.

After a recent enhancement project, the modern campground and shelters have reopened! While the beach remains open, the beach building remains under construction; portable toilets are available for visitors. An approximate $4.35 million in federal relief funding from Gov. Whitmer's Building Michigan Together Plan made these and other renovations possible.
