Twin Lakes State Forest Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Managed by the MIDNR Forest Resources Division within the Atlanta State Forest Area, Twin Lakes State Forest Campground gives campers access to a forested setting on a lake in northern Michigan's Cheboygan County. Sites are drive-in or walk-in, and the campground stays open year-round. Cell reception is spotty, so plan accordingly before arriving.

The sites are well-separated by trees, giving each one a degree of privacy that reviewers consistently note as a standout feature. A small dock provides lake access, and the swim area draws campers looking to spend time on the water. Loons are active on the lake at night, particularly around midnight, which is worth knowing if you're a light sleeper. The facilities include vault toilets and a hand pump for water, along with picnic tables and firepits at each site. Rebekah J. describes it as "rustic, which is exactly what we wanted."

The campground tends to stay lightly used. Multiple reviewers noted only one or two other groups present during their stays, which reflects the low-traffic character of camping near Atlanta State Forest Area in this part of Michigan. Nearby options include Black Lake State Forest Upper ORV Campground and Onaway State Park Campground for campers who want to compare sites in the region.

Firewood is available on-site, but bringing a water filter as a backup to the hand pump is a reasonable precaution for longer stays.

Had the Campground practically to ourselves

We recently camped at Twin Lakes June 23-25th. The sites were a decent size and the Campground only had one other group. The sites were very nice, included a picnic table and firepit, my favorite feature though was PRIVACY, each site was surrounded by trees to separate you from possible neighbors.

Cell reception is spotty, no electric or showers, THIS IS RUSTIC, which is exactly what we wanted. There were the outhouses (Vaults) and a handpump for water.

It has stairs leading down to a small dock on the lake. There were plenty of Loons that made noise around midnight every night but other then that it was pretty quite.

Nice State Park

This is a typical Michigan State Park. The facilities are well maintained and clean. On a nice lake with a good swim area. We stayed because of the location to Copper Harbor and the Porcupine Mountains.
