With 18 sites arranged across three loops, Pretty Lake State Forest Campground runs on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required. Sites are spacious enough to fit pickup campers and towed pop-ups, and each comes with a fire ring and picnic table. Vault toilets are placed within each loop, and hand-pump water is available on site. Cell coverage is limited, with AT&T users reporting two to three bars at best, so plan accordingly before arrival.
The campground sits within the Pretty Lake Quiet Area, which prohibits ORVs and motorized watercraft on the lakes. That restriction shapes the experience considerably. Paddlers have access to a network of ten lakes connected by marked portage trails, and the main lakes are stocked with trout. Several sites sit directly on the lakeshore, with open sightlines across the water. Hiking trails extend from the campground to neighboring lakes, some of which have hike-in or boat-in sites for campers wanting more solitude. Mosquitoes can be heavy along the trails, and bug netting is strongly recommended in warmer months.
"Peaceful as it can get," notes Chris M. about the no-motor policy and overall atmosphere. The season runs April through October, and nightly rates have historically been in the $15 to $20 range. Dogs are permitted. Campers planning a broader Upper Peninsula trip can compare campgrounds around Newberry State Forest Area for additional options in the region. High Bridge State Forest Campground, roughly three miles east, provides an alternative for those who prefer a different setting.
