Managed by the Massachusetts state park system within the Cape Cod Canal corridor, Scusset Beach State Reservation sits on the north shore of the canal near the Sagamore Bridge, giving campers direct access to a sandy beach, a jetty, and the Cape Cod Canal Trail. The campground runs from May through December, with the extended late-season period limited to self-contained units once the restrooms close. Nightly rates run $22 to $34, and reservations are recommended, especially for the five designated tent sites, which fill well ahead of peak summer weekends.
The site layout skews heavily toward RVs. Most sites have paved parking pads with full hookups, electric, water, and sewer, and the terrain is largely open with few trees. As Angela T. notes, "the winds can be gnarly" given the lack of tree cover, though that same exposure makes for clear stargazing over the water. Sites 32, 34, and 36 sit closer to a tree line at the back of the campground and provide more shelter than the exposed rows in the main loop. Fires are only permitted at the five tent sites; RV campers use a communal fire area near the campground entrance.
Fishing off the canal and biking the adjacent path are the most consistently mentioned activities across reviews. The beach itself draws consistent praise for clean sand and manageable crowds compared to other Cape-area beaches. Dogs are welcome at the campground but are not permitted on the beach during peak summer season. Shawme Crowell State Forest Campground is an alternative for campers who want more shade and seclusion. Book tent sites as early as possible; they are few and go fast.
