Garrett Park, Maryland provides access to several established campgrounds within a 30-mile radius, including Cherry Hill Park and Greenbelt Park Campground. These areas accommodate a range of camping styles from traditional tent sites to RV hookups, cabin rentals, and glamping options. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park also offers primitive camping along the historic towpath with sites like Swains Lock providing riverside camping opportunities. Many campgrounds in this region serve as convenient bases for exploring Washington DC while still enjoying outdoor recreation.

Camping availability varies significantly by season, with several campgrounds like Little Bennett operating from April through October. "If I lived in Washington DC, this is where I would ride my bike to every weekend. Bring the family, bring the fishing poles and forget that there is a hyper uptight city just a few miles away," noted one visitor about Swains Lock. Many sites require advance reservations, especially during summer weekends and holiday periods. The region experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters with occasional snow, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons. Water access points along the Potomac River provide recreational opportunities, while campgrounds closer to urban areas often feature more developed amenities including electric hookups, showers, and dump stations.

Campers consistently mention the convenience of sites like Cherry Hill Park for accessing Washington DC attractions. The park provides transportation options to the city, making it popular with visitors focused on sightseeing. "This is a campers dream site. Everything you can think of is offered here. Great location with access to all forms of transportation," one reviewer shared. In contrast, the hiker-biker campsites along the C&O Canal offer more rustic experiences with basic amenities and greater immersion in natural settings. These sites typically feature fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets or portable facilities. Visitors seeking solitude should consider weekday visits, as many campgrounds report filling completely on weekends during peak season, particularly at waterfront locations.

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

      Gambrill State Park Campground

      Great Camp Spot

This is a great camping spot. The sites aren’t too close together and the hosts are very friendly. The only reason I gave it four stars is because we are near a highway so you can hear cars throughout the night. But the crickets make up for it by being as loud as possible. With the fees, it cost $25 for a non-electric site and with access to showers after a long trek I was happy to pay.

      Redemption Springs

      Pleasant Stay and Hosts

We stayed at Redemption Springs to get relatively close to Baltimore without bringing our 30ft travel trailer into the city. Seth and the other gentlemen I spoke with were all extremely accommodating. Enjoyed learning about their approach to restorative farming and purchasing a variety of treats at the farm store. Beef, pork, chicken, seasonings, baked goods, and more. We booked on Hipcamp and recommend following his driving instructions. Our rig fit fine by tuhe main barn and they kept an eye on us going in and out to make sure we didn't have issues making any of the turns. Lots of farm life!

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

    Guide to Garrett Park

Camping options near Garrett Park, Maryland range from tent camping to full-service RV facilities, with most sites open April through October. The region sits in the Piedmont plateau with elevations around 300-400 feet and receives approximately 40 inches of rainfall annually. Most campgrounds within a 30-mile radius feature wooded sites with moderate privacy, though sites at popular locations often require reservations 3-6 months in advance.

    What to do

Disc golf courses: Bull Run Regional Park features an 18-hole disc golf course popular with campers. "This is definitely a family campground. So my activities for kids and places to run around," notes a visitor to Pohick Bay Campground.

Fishing opportunities: Burke Lake Park offers fishing in its centerpiece lake. "Beautiful Park. Not much to do. Close to DC, but still far away. In suburbia," mentions one visitor about the lakeside opportunities at Burke Lake Park Campground.

Mountain biking trails: Trails at Lake Fairfax provide quality riding for various skill levels. "This campground is nice for a quick weekend and does have pretty trails next to the campground. The sites are largely in more of a meadow and not many are very wooded," shares one camper about their experience at Lake Fairfax Campground.

Water recreation: Several campgrounds offer swimming and boating options during summer months. "Nice grounds and tent pad. Ample camp site size. Just right next to a neighborhood," notes one visitor about Little Bennett Campground, which provides multiple outdoor recreation options.

    What campers like

Proximity to urban amenities: Many campers appreciate access to shopping and services while maintaining a camping experience. "The park is close to Washington DC and offers a conceirge service for tours and things to do. On site are pools, splash pad, rv supplies and repair parts, a snack bar and lots more," explains a visitor at Cherry Hill Park.

Clean facilities: Consistent bathroom cleanliness ranks high on camper priorities. "Five stars for the restroom facilities. Bright, large, clean and very well maintained. It's very convenient and plenty of activities for the kids," notes a visitor to Bull Run Regional Park.

Wooded privacy: Many sites offer natural separation from neighbors. "Sites were well-maintained, including lavatories. Plenty of tree cover," explains a visitor to Greenbelt Park Campground.

Family activities: Campgrounds near Garrett Park frequently offer organized events. "The check in is a breeze and the staff is super nice and helpful. They informed us that they had a scavenger hunt for the kids going all weekend, they had an outdoor movie scheduled for Friday night, a campfire story time scheduled for Saturday night and crafts scheduled for Sunday morning," shares a Pohick Bay camper.

    What you should know

Seasonal availability: Most campgrounds operate from April through October, with limited winter options. "Living nearby but storing my popup camper elsewhere, I often park my camper here for a few days while I pack it for a trip. It's also just nice to experience that 'getaway' feeling without being too far from home," notes a Greenbelt Park visitor.

Reservation requirements: Weekend spots fill quickly, especially at waterfront locations. "I arrived later in the evening that I had expected and the booth was closed (something I learned is common practice since they have changed over from cash to reservations only for this site)," explains one camper about their experience.

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience traffic or airport noise. "There is a shooting range in the park. It is on a flight path for DCA. And, I66 is not that far away," warns a camper at Bull Run Regional Park.

Weather impacts: Spring brings potential flooding at some sites. "While we were here, there was a fairly heavy day of rain. Couple inches, I suppose, but nothing Biblical. The mouths of the metal culverts in our loop were bent downward from campers driving over them, which obstructed the flow. Result was lots of standing water at our campsite," shares one visitor.

    Tips for camping with families

Water features for kids: Waterparks and splash pads provide entertainment during summer months. "Great campground and park for families. Swimming, biking, and hiking," notes a visitor about Burke Lake Park.

Playgrounds and recreation: Several campgrounds offer multiple play areas. "We had a great time here over a long weekend in August. The check in is a breeze and the staff is super nice and helpful. There is also a pool/water park in the park as well as a nice network of trails. There is plenty of things to do here to keep a family occupied," explains a Pohick Bay camper.

Educational opportunities: Ranger programs run regularly at some parks. "Rangers keep a close eye on things, and there are monthly programs at the campfire circle that I sometimes attend even when not camping here," mentions a visitor to Greenbelt Park.

Nature activities: Scavenger hunts and nature walks engage children. "Our family loves this camp ground. It's conveniently located, it's quite, it's beautiful and there is plenty to do to keep the kids busy," reports a Little Bennett visitor.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds have uneven sites requiring additional equipment. "Sites vary in levelness, some are fairly level and some are on a mini hill. Driveways are all very narrow," notes a Greenbelt Park visitor about the camping conditions.

Power options: Electric hookup availability varies significantly between parks. "We stayed at site D72 for 4 days. The sites are quiet, very spacious, level, and heavily wooded with 50A service, water and sewer hookup," shares an RVer about Little Bennett Campground.

Cell reception considerations: Coverage can be spotty in wooded areas. "AT&T 5 MB/s w/o booster(1 bar), 8 MB/s with it(2 bars). There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was descent using an external omni antenna," reports a Little Bennett camper.

Tree clearance: Some campgrounds have low-hanging branches. "You get what you pay for. This campground has so much to offer. We loved it," notes a Cherry Hill Park visitor, highlighting the well-maintained grounds that accommodate larger rigs.
