Ragtown is located on the Texas shore of Toledo Bend Reservoir and is maintained and operated by the Sabine River Authority of Texas. Completed in 1975, this area is nestled high on a bluff and offers spectacular views of the water. The boat ramp allows access to the lake most of the year. San Augustine Park is set along the Ayish Bayou tributary on the shores of Sam Rayburn Reservoir. In spring, take advantage of excellent birding opportunities as neotropical birds like warblers and vireos pass through the lake en route to the Gulf of Mexico.
The lake is a highly popular destination for boating and fishing. Game fish include largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish, but it is the abundance of bass, which inspires more than 500 annual tournaments.
With more than 114,000 surface acres, Sam Rayburn is the largest man-made lake that is completely within the boundaries of the state of Texas. The reservoir is fed by the Angelina River, a major tributary of the Neches River. The piney woods region boasts native flora like orchids, insect-eating plants and scores of animal species.
From the eastern edge of the lake, hikers can embark on a 28-mile trail that heads east to the Toledo Bend Reservoir.

The Army Recreation sight managed by MWR is a very well run campground and boat launch. Making a reservation was easy, and the lady i made the reservation with initially even called to follow up when the weather turned ugly.
Our stay was in one of their Yurts. Though they do have cabins as well as primitive camping options. The yurt was supplied with two bunks, the bottoms being a a full size with the top bunks being twins. Amenities included heating and air conditioning as well as a mini fridge, keurig, and a couple of small drawers and a lamp. The only real complaint i can say i had was some of the linoleum tile was loose inside. Other than that, the yurt was an interesting cross between cabin and tent.
Fishing is also very available, as well as playground, boat launch, boat rentals and R.V. accommodations as well.
We may just go back and try a cabin next time as the temperatures have been getting cold here.
Also be aware, there is a one time pet fee when staying in the cabins and yurts.

Primitive camping along the 10mi Backbone trail. Took out the hammock and camped out around the halfway mark along the trail. You can set up shop around an old fire pit or make one of your own. I chose the latter. The backbone trail has to be the prettiest trail in the state of Louisiana. It's really the only place in the state to experience actual hills. It reached 23 degrees at night which was one of the coldest temperatures recorded in the state this year. A must do!

GuideThe view was great. We were tent camping and were told spot 11 and 10 would be the best for tent camping. This was not the best spots the roads also need a lot of attention they were very rough.

LegendCAMPGROUND REVIEW:
Located inside the Kisatchie National Forest, Kisatchie District, this campground is great. This section of National Forest is home to over 30 miles of nature trails. The trails are for hiking, biking, horseback riding and off road vehicle riding. This campground is just steps away from the bayou where you can launch a canoe or kayak depending on the water level. Fishing and swimming are great pastimes here. The site has a grassy area and fire pit. There are vault toilets and NO WATER so be prepared for that. The day use area offers picnic tables, fire pits and grills. There are 2 different sites for camping on either side of the day use area. The day use area has a lot of local traffic but we did not encounter a lot of overnight campers. It is very secluded and the sound of the bayou is serene. There are lots of wildlife sounds at night but we didn't see anything more than a squirrel. We loved our stay here. We hiked, biked, and relaxed in the low waters of the bayou.

As a Ranger for the Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time - today I tested the INNO Aero Light 2 (2 bike) hitch rack.
This bike rack made our trip so easy. It was easy to set up, easy to install (my 8 yr old did it). The simple hitch design slides right into a standard 2" hitch receiver or can be adjusted to 1 1/4". The screw bolt came with it along with a wrench for tightening on the receiver. We easily secured 2 bikes to the rack. Bike weight needs to be less than 33 lbs., have a top tube and a seat tube. Frame size 1/2" - 2 1/4". We loved this rack for its sturdiness and lightweightedness. It traveled great, we drove with the rack on my SUV for over 300 miles and we never had any problems. A great feature is the easy fold down option to allow access to the back of the car. This rack also features great locking mechanisms. You can lock the rack at the hitch as well as lock the built in strap around the bikes. As our little one grows and his bike gets bigger, we will definitely get a larger INNO rack to carry all the bikes. For now, the 2 bike rack is working great.
Pros: lightweight, easy install, easy fold down feature, great locking mechanisms.

We stopped at this site just for 1 night of our trip and were very happy with our stay. Super friendly staff, clean bathroom and laundry facilities, full hookups and very quiet. In the wild so expect bugs but nothing that made our stay uncomfortable. 3 gas stations right up the road-2 of which are RV friendly. Would definitely stay here again.
GuideNice location with a beautiful view of the hills. There is full hookups with a Bathhouse and free WiFi. Entrance road is gravel and very steep but I was able to drive my 34’ motor home up pulling my jeep no problem. The owner does not stay on site but he did meet us there when we arrived. Not far from Natchitoches , LA. There is a big Christmas festival there late November and December with lots of lights.

RangerThis is a nice, relatively secluded campsite on the Sabine River / Toledo Bend Reservoir area. Access is easy as it is a mix of hard packed gravel and paved roads, with designated parking for each campsite. Sites are well designed with grills, fire pits, and ample flat space for tents. The bugs were intense but that's what you get in East Texas in the summer, but overall it's a good spot. They are currently making improvements to the area so there is some construction and some closed sites, but we visited on the weekend and no one was working.
RangerHalf the sites are closed but it looks like they are about done fixing them. So much wildlife and no one else around. Beautiful area. There aren’t stores near by so don’t forget anything. One bathroom but was decently clean. No hiking trails but you can hike the shore pretty far.

Guide1/26/23-1/30/23- This is a great COE campsite that is spacious, clean, quiet, and site#63 has lake views on 3 sides. A picnic table, fire-pit, lantern post, 30A electric, and water are provided. This is a back-in site that slopes significantly to the rear(lake side) though. I needed to lower the front of my 34’ fifth wheel trailer 16” to level it; L/R leveling was reasonable needing 1/2” on the right side. The grassy area around the site would be great for outdoor games and the water access would be great to fish from shore, boat access to the site, or swimming. The staff were very congenial and the dump station is conveniently located on the right side just before exiting the campground. Verizon 4G was 4-bars with 20Mbps download and 2Mbps upload speeds. I paid$13/night with my Interagency Senior Pass. Too bad that it was rainy most of the weekend and we didn’t have nicer weather.
GuideBeautifal long flat beach. Park folks were awesome in our lat minute camp ascurrsion. We ended up sleep in truck with really no camp stuff. They gave us hurricane food and ice packs in big bundle. Kindest thing done for us in quite some time. Keeps me a continued camper. There is also a little store by entrance of park b4 come in. He is a kind person also. The folks here make the park what it is. Serene.
GuideStayed over the long weekend immediately following Thanksgiving. Sure was very long and spacious with a great view of the lake. Sure was a little uneven, so some leveling was required.

This park has so much to offer but I notice the upkeep is less and less overtime. The “prime view” back in sites are fairly level and clean, Pull throw sites aren’t really level. Several of the plugs at the breaker box need replacement. Shower houses are in need of a desperate DEEP cleaning. I have stayed once a month for the past few months and hate to watch it not being taken care of. Fishing and boating are excellent and the park could be with some upkeep. I will re-evaluate my visit next month.
TravelerThis camp ground is well kept. There is a nice beach and really nice fishing pears and dock. There is a large open pavilion to rent as well as an enclosed group building. Cabins and duplex housing are also an option. I prefer the pull through full hook up section but there are plenty of tent and RV sites with water and electricity. There are some short trails and an amphitheater is located near the bath house. I try to camp there once a year.
