    Lake Claiborne State Park Campground

    Fantastic facilities

I camped on two occasions while in north LA on business. Bath houses are new, clean and climate controlled. Plenty of sites to choose from when I stayed though all of the waterfront sites were taken. Family friendly, not rowdy. I’d take young kids without hesitation if mine weren’t grown.

Lake D'Arbonne State Park — New Lake D'arbonne State Park

    Beautiful beautiful beautiful place

This is not my first time to visit but rapidly becoming a favorite. Each trip is different and I find different ways to get more out of the park. They have great hiking trails, sites by the lake, and now I’ve discovered the biking trails too. There’s disc golf, a tennis center and multiple playgrounds. You can camp out in the campground or stay in a cabin or lodge. They also have canvas tents on wooden decks that are super cute. I stayed in the RV for my visit and have both water and electric at my site.

Lake D'Arbonne State Park — New Lake D'arbonne State Park

    Resort like State Park

Lots of amenities. Tennis courses, disc golf course, hiking/biking trails, swimming pool, cabins, lodges, several playgrounds, picnic areas, pavilions & WiFi. Very reasonable sites for $23/night unless you’re in the lakeside premium sites which are more. Laundry room next to the bath house and playground. I will definitely be back.

    Lake Claiborne State Park Campground

    Stunning Views with Great Amenities

We tent camp here in early Spring in the camping area #2 and comeback weekend after weekend. Many wonderfully marked hiking trails, two of the best frisbe golf courses in Louisiana. There's a nice little beach where the kids can play and a playground area as well. The bathrooms are clean and warm (welcome in the winter and spring). The pavement is well kept and great for kids to ride bikes or scooters. The King of the Moutain Trail is my favorite becaues of it's wooden bridge and tiny waterfall.

    Jimmie Davis State Park Campground

Prettiest La. State Park (so far)

Jimmie Davis State Park is wonderful, well maintained, and has a number of amenities.  Prettiest La. State Park I've stayed in so far. We had a great stay the days before Thanksgiving, and the weather was awesome. The fall leaf colors were spectacular. Caney Lake is clean and beautiful. I enjoyed walking and sitting along the lake in the mornings. Bathrooms were clean.

Stayed in campsite#52. Back-in site with asphalt parking, picnic table and fire ring. 15A/30A/50A, and water. No deck, sewer, Wi-Fi, and cable TV hookups. It has a large area on door/awning side. Awning faced west but the trees provided ample shade from the evening sun shining underneath. The spot is well spaced from other sites. The site is located near the lake. I wish the site had a paved patio or deck like site 51 and 54 on either side. Nearest neighbor was at least 30-40 ft. Away. Roads in the park were asphalt/concrete/gravel.

Both AT&T and Verizon had low signal(2 bars each). AT&T Speedtest= 16.8 Mbps down, 1.4 Mbps up. We camped in a Travel Trailer. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at Jimmie Davis State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lake D'Arbonne State Park — New Lake D'arbonne State Park

Beautiful state park with something for everyone

This lakeside state park has RV and tent camping, cabins, lodges and YURTS available. There are also day use pavilions available for family reunions, employee barbecues or birthday celebrations. You can also rent a meeting room in the visitors center.

There are lots of recreational opportunities which include hiking, biking, fishing, canoe and kayak rentals, tennis courts and an 18-hole disc golf course. They also have a large hiking trail system. Closed right now but available Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend they also have a really large swimming pool. A tornado hit the park in March 2021 and there’s still some trees down and a brief section of the trail I walked on today that wasn’t accessible but it is an easy detour amazing how much they have restored.

Lake D'Arbonne State Park — New Lake D'arbonne State Park

    Such a lovely place

Lake Darbonne is our first experience with camping. I really didn’t know what to expect but we really loved it : the staff is really helpful, the campsite is really cosy (and not crowded during week days), the view on the lake is beautiful, etc.

We already planned to go back there on our way home to Louisiana.

Guide to Chatham

Glamping close to Chatham, Louisiana offers a blend of comfort and outdoor immersion in the north Louisiana landscape. The region features humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers, making year-round camping viable. Typical elevation ranges from 150 to 250 feet above sea level, with the surrounding area characterized by pine forests, cypress-lined lakes, and rolling hills.

What to do

Disc golf courses: Lake Claiborne State Park maintains two well-marked disc golf courses that draw enthusiasts from across the region. "Two Disc Golf Courses and hiking trails. Nice facilities with all lodging options from primitive tent, yurt, RV hookups, and cabins," notes Penny A. about Lake Claiborne State Park.

Fishing: Caney Lake at Jimmie Davis State Park is known for trophy bass fishing. "Good lake for fishing and water sports, many sites you can park your boat very close," reports Adam R. about Jimmie Davis State Park. The park includes boat launches and fish cleaning stations for anglers.

Hiking trails: Explore the marked trails featuring wooden bridges and seasonal waterfalls. "The King of the Mountain Trail is my favorite because of its wooden bridge and tiny waterfall," shares Sarah B. about Lake Claiborne. Trails range from beginner-friendly paths to more challenging hilly terrain.

What campers like

Wildlife viewing: The parks offer excellent opportunities to observe native species in their natural habitat. "Whitetail deer, owls, fish/gar, butterflies, dragonflies, fireflies, and much more!" explains Penny A. about her experience at Lake Claiborne State Park.

Variety of accommodations: Beyond traditional camping, visitors appreciate the range of lodging options. "Beautiful cabins. Great piers on a very nice lake with big, beautiful cypress trees," notes Steve S. about Lake D'Arbonne State Park. This flexibility allows visitors to choose experiences that match their comfort needs.

Water recreation: Lakes provide natural focal points for activities. "Lake Claiborne was a gorgeous lake to kayak on," shares Cat R. The clear waters and protected coves create ideal conditions for paddling, swimming, and fishing throughout much of the year.

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Communication can be unreliable in these natural settings. "Absolutely no cell service," warns Cat R. about Lake Claiborne. Similarly, Brent C. notes, "Wi-Fi did not work anywhere in park (signal broadcasted fine just no connection to internet) AT&T is non-existent."

Terrain considerations: Be prepared for uneven ground at some campsites. "Not level ground, but we managed with enough blocks to get it level," advises Cat R. Bringing leveling blocks for RVs and carefully selecting tent sites can make your stay more comfortable.

Seasonal crowds: Weekdays offer a quieter experience compared to busier weekends. "The campsite is really cozy (and not crowded during week days)," mentions Gil C. about Jimmie Davis State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Beach and splash areas: Several parks offer designated swimming areas perfect for children. "This was a back in site. Water and electric, no sewer, but had a dump station. Absolutely no cell service. Lake Claiborne was a gorgeous lake to kayak on," reports Cat R.

Playground access: Multiple play areas provide entertainment options for younger campers. "Nice little beach where the kids can play and a playground area as well," notes Sarah B. These facilities are typically located near bathhouses for convenience.

Educational opportunities: The parks offer natural classrooms for kids to learn about local ecosystems. "We love coming here with the kids just for a weekend get away," shares Rachael M. about her family's experiences at Jimmie Davis State Park.

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Not all sites offer full hookups, so check specifications when booking. "Great Lake spots no sewer on lake spots," mentions Aleia B. about Lake Claiborne. The most scenic waterfront sites often have limited hookups compared to interior locations.

Laundry facilities: Some parks provide on-site laundry services for extended stays. "Laundry room next to the bath house and playground. I will definitely be back," shares Cheri H. about her experience at Lake D'Arbonne State Park.
