Reservations are available online at Kentucky River Campground, a privately managed RV and tent site along the Kentucky River in Frankfort, with nightly rates running $45 to $55. The access road has a reputation for being rough, so tow vehicles and low-clearance rigs should approach with care. Full hookups with electric, water, and sewer connections make it a workable base for RV campers, and a dump station is on-site. Tent sites sit right at the river's edge, with electricity available at those spots as well.
Sites are notably spacious, with trees and shrubs dividing each one from its neighbors, and each comes with a fire ring and picnic table. Reviewers consistently mention river access as a draw, both for swimming and for the sound of moving water at night. River levels and current can vary significantly after rain, with reports of fast, debris-heavy water following heavy storms. The bathrooms are older but described as well-maintained. The campground can feel crowded, and one reviewer noted lots are close together in parts of the loop.
The location puts campers within reach of several distillery stops. As Nancy R. puts it, it's a "perfect location for some Bourbon Trail and beer hopping." Nearby trails provide additional options, including muddy but manageable routes after wet weather. Dogs are welcome. The campground also rents RVs on-site, an unusual option for groups without their own rig. Still Waters Campground and Elkhorn Creek RV Park are alternatives for campers comparing places to camp near Frankfort. River-facing sites fill quickly on summer weekends, so booking ahead is advisable.
