Elkhorn Campground sits along the banks of Elkhorn Creek in Frankfort, Kentucky, operating under private management from April through October. The layout is open rather than wooded, with a notable number of sites that back directly up to the creek, though reviewers note that the first few creek-side spots are partially screened by brush and may not have a clear sightline to the water. The campground runs full hookups including electric, water, and sewer, along with a dump station, WiFi, and a bathhouse with showers.
The staff draws consistent mention across reviews. One owner proactively called a guest ahead of a rainy weekend to move their site away from a low-lying area known to collect water. "The bathrooms are cleaned daily," notes Christina W., who stayed creek-side for five nights in May 2026. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table. The bathhouse is frequently described as well-maintained, though at least one reviewer flagged proximity to the dump station as a drawback for the bathroom nearest the tent sites.
Anglers can fish Elkhorn Creek directly from the campground, though a Kentucky fishing license is required since it's public water. On-site amenities include a pool, a putt-putt golf course, a playground, and a small camp store. Weekend stays tend to bring larger crowds and more children on site, so campers looking for a quieter stay may want to plan a weekday visit. William S. notes that sites are fairly close together, consistent with most commercial campgrounds of this type.
The campground is well-positioned for day trips into Kentucky's bourbon country. Buffalo Trace Distillery is a short drive away, and the state Capitol is nearby. Tent campers should know that creek-adjacent sites are reserved for RVs and campers, which limits the experience for those without a rig. Reservations are available and pets are allowed. Campers wanting a different setup in the area can also look at Elkhorn Creek RV Park a few miles north, or browse campgrounds near Frankfort for additional configurations.
