Wilburton Fishing Pond

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Sitting within Cimarron National Grassland in the far southwest corner of Kansas, Wilburton Fishing Pond is a dispersed camping area managed by the US Forest Service, roughly 15 miles from the nearest town. There are no designated sites. Campers pull in and set up on open grassland, with the pond itself a one-minute walk from where most vehicles park.

The surrounding terrain is flat, open grassland with ragweed growing heavily across the area, which visitors with allergies should factor into trip planning. Crowd levels run low. Reviewers consistently note arriving to find no other campers present, which makes this a reasonable overnight stop for those passing through the region. "Lots of nice, quiet atmosphere," notes Rick M., though he flags that ragweed can be a real problem in season.

Cell coverage depends on your carrier. Verizon users report excellent signal, while T-Mobile comes in weak. Nights get cold, even in the shoulder seasons, so layers are worth packing regardless of daytime temperatures. Campfires are allowed, and the site is listed as ADA accessible and big rig friendly. Nearby, Mallard Ponds Fishing Site and Cimarron Campground provide additional options along the same stretch of grassland. Anglers and those looking for places to camp around Richfield will find this area lightly used and easy to access by vehicle.

No one here, save for the ragweed.

There are loads of ragweed plants everywhere, and it's driving my allergies nuts. But no one's around, and it's a beautiful place. Lots of nice, quiet atmosphere.

Wilburton pond, so pretty

It was easy to find, the pond is a one minute walk away and very pretty. I was the only one here and it was nice and peaceful. It was very chilly at night, but that is to be expected in November. I don’t have a heater, so I had to bundle up. I had excellent cell service (Verizon)
