    Gunsmoke RV Park

    Noisy

We stayed here in June for two nights on a road trip north. Front section of spots 1-43 are close to the road and it is very noisy. They made these front sites big rig friendly by using the site next to yours for unhooking your tow or towed vehicle. We were put in the front section due to a large work crew taking up a lot of spaces in the back section.  We could not open our awning in the first assigned spot, so the staff was accommodating and moved us over one spot. Come to find out, it is very windy here, so awnings are not used very often. We would highly recommend getting a site in the back. Sites 50-80. Less noise, long pull throughs and nice wide grass areas. The wifi was not very strong or was too busy, so we used our own hot spot. This is conveniently located close to Dodge City attractions.

    Watersports Campground

    Where did the Lake Go

Water Sports, no longer has it's Lake. There are still some trailers here from when this is to be the watering hole for the area. Over 100 plus sites. Many 30 amp less 50 amps, water at every site and a dump station. Like many other parks in this region the burs are here too. Laundry Room good for small to medium sized items. Bath house has codes and are in the need of a little TLC, but are clean. Great price. They made a fresh pot of coffee for is before we left. Customer Service is awesome.

    Prairie Wind RV Park

    All the Comforts

This is a tiny (5 pull-thru slots) RV park run by the county in Montezuma, Kansas. Perfect for an overnight stay, it has 30 and 50 amp hookups, sewer and water. All for only $20/night. Each slot is a gravel drive with a concrete pad on the side that has a concrete picnic table. It’s right off KS-56, but we didn’t find it too noisy. I would definitely stay here again if passing by this way. Even has the added bonus of a small adjacent field where we were able to kite our paramotor wing for a bit.

    Gunsmoke RV Park

Compared to other campgrounds in Kansas, maybe 4 stars.

Keep in mind, we haven’t found any five-star campgrounds in Kansas, and a shortage of campgrounds in general, so we were glad to find this perfectly adequate, safe space with level gravel pads close together. Full hookups. The best thing about it is its proximity to Dodge City.

    Meade City Park

    Simple, small city park.

It's not clear, when you enter the park, where you can park. After driving around the loop a few times, and observing others doing the same, we finally found a small RV parking sign close to the ground about 1-2 feet up from the ground by the large tree, on the east side of the park. We parked under that big tree. Another RV came in and just parked next to the loop on the east side of the park. It was free camping. Highway nearby we occasionally would hear trucks but usually sleep well inside our van so it wasn't a problem after we fell asleep. The bathroom was locked up. There is a dump station and potable water there, free as well. No electric hook ups. Very simple, small park. I would guess there's space for no more than 5-6 RVs but it's off the road a bit and not busy when we were there.

    Gunsmoke RV Park

    Nice park with spacious sites

Sites 50 through 82 are in the back away from the highway and very quiet. 33 through 44 are back in sites and front the highway and are noisier. 50 to 82 have 20 feet of grassy space between sites, I highly recommend these sites. They also have trees to provide shade. Some sites have multiple sewer dumps so your positioning of your rig is less of a problem. They accept the Dyrt Pro card for a 10% discount. All level sites. 😊

Full hookup sites typically cost $20-30 per night, with spacious, separated sites available at several parks. Most RV parks in southwest Kansas remain open year-round despite seasonal weather variations, providing travelers with reliable accommodations while exploring the region.

What to do

Explore equestrian attractions: At Cimarron RV Park, visitors can observe a nearby horse farm. "Small campground but has what we needed. Bonus it has a laundry mat. Second bonus there is a horse farm right behind the campground," notes Nancy B.

Fish at local reservoirs: Horse Thief Reservoir provides excellent fishing opportunities. "I don't fish but see and hear fish jumping all the time," reports Matthew G. The reservoir allows swimming and water sports during summer months.

Visit Dodge City attractions: Gunsmoke RV Park serves as a convenient base for exploring Dodge City's western heritage sites. "Really close to town. Really friendly staff. Comfortable and quiet," explains Charles M. Most historic attractions are within a 10-minute drive.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many parks maintain well-kept amenities. At 4 Aces RV Park, campers appreciate the upkeep. "Campground was clean and well kept. We had no issues hooking up and got a restful nights sleep aside from the occasional train," reports Lindsey P.

Pool access: Some parks offer swimming pools during hot Kansas summers. "The pool was clean. Site spacing is excellent," notes Kelly B. about Gunsmoke RV Park, which maintains an 8-foot deep swimming pool unusual for the region.

Economical options: Budget-conscious travelers appreciate Ford State Fishing Lake's free camping. "The sites are gravel and have their own picnic tables. Didn't realize kansas could be so beautiful! Nice view of the lake," shares Angela H.

What you should know

Highway noise considerations: Some parks have sections closer to highways with increased noise. At Gunsmoke RV Park, "Front section of spots 1-43 are close to the road and it is very noisy...We would highly recommend getting a site in the back. Sites 50-80. Less noise, long pull throughs and nice wide grass areas," advises Missy A.

Limited bathroom facilities: Several parks have minimal restroom facilities. At Ford State Fishing Lake, "Vault toilets were a bit gross, but they did their job. Toilets are a bit of a walk from the camp sites," mentions Ethan D.

Water conditions: Lake levels fluctuate seasonally. "Not much of a lake, right now? Kinda a puddle, but it's an awesome place and bet it will fill up nicely. Sign says, harmful bacteria in water, so don't swim or let your dogs in the water," reports a visitor to Ford State Fishing Lake.

Tips for camping with families

Consider newer facilities: Horse Thief Reservoir continues to improve its amenities. "They have made lots of improvements. They have installed more cement pads, more picnic table covers and windbreaks, and putting in new sewers on sites. Planted lots of trees also," notes Jeff I.

Look for recreation options: Some parks feature game rooms and other family amenities. Gunsmoke RV Park includes "a vice of 50 or 30 amp power, water, dump, showers/bathrooms, laundry, game room and pool," according to Grace D.

Check site spacing: Ramblin Rose RV Park & Motel offers quieter sites with more privacy. "Very quiet. Lots of trees. The sites are level," notes Beverly M., making it suitable for families seeking more space.

Tips from RVers

Watch for leveling challenges: Many sites require adjustments. At Ford State Fishing Lake, "The flattest most level site I could find is barely adequate. All the rest have quite a tilt," warns Butch K.

Consider campground sections: Different areas within the same park can vary significantly. At Watersports Campground, "Many 30 amp less 50 amps, water at every site and a dump station," explains Terri B., highlighting the importance of requesting specific site types when making reservations.

Access grocery options: Some parks offer convenient food access. "Very OK place. Clean, has wifi, grocery store across the street, and there was a food trailer with good food next door," notes Bruce about Cimarron RV Park, making it easier to restock supplies during extended RV camping near Wright, Kansas.
