    Gunsmoke RV Park

    Nicely Separated Campsites

This Campground has one of the most separated sites of the places we've stayed. Most of the sites at the rear part of the park have spaces separated by one's own grassy area and trees, where the picnic table is situated. There's a vice of 50 or 30 amp power, water, dump, showers/bathrooms, laundry, game room and pool. We had to arrive after office closure and the owner was very accommodating about sending our space number, map to the site, and codes by text. WiFi has a password, unlike a few other places with unprotected WiFi.

    Ok

The place itself is just ok. It’s just a parking lot of RVs. No trees, no pool, nothing on site. It is close to a nice park and a water park if you want to add more to your bill. The showers suck. Although clean, you can not adjust the hot or cold and it turns off every minute. The people were nice but not very informative.

    Meade City Park

    Simple, small city park.

It's not clear, when you enter the park, where you can park. After driving around the loop a few times, and observing others doing the same, we finally found a small RV parking sign close to the ground about 1-2 feet up from the ground by the large tree, on the east side of the park. We parked under that big tree. Another RV came in and just parked next to the loop on the east side of the park. It was free camping. Highway nearby we occasionally would hear trucks but usually sleep well inside our van so it wasn't a problem after we fell asleep. The bathroom was locked up. There is a dump station and potable water there, free as well. No electric hook ups. Very simple, small park. I would guess there's space for no more than 5-6 RVs but it's off the road a bit and not busy when we were there.

Guide to Wright

Glamping options near Wright, Kansas include well-maintained facilities with varied terrain and seasonal considerations. The Kansas climate brings hot summers with temperatures frequently above 90°F and cold winters that can drop below freezing. Sites in this region typically offer electric hookups alongside water access points, though availability varies by season with some closures during winter months.

What to do

Water activities at Horsethief Reservoir: The reservoir provides fishing, swimming, and boating opportunities within an hour's drive of Garden City. "Growing up in southwest Kansas it is difficult to take a quick weekend trip anywhere close. Horsethief sure changed that. A quick hour drive from Garden City and you can be on the water or setting up your camper," notes Cody at Horse Thief Reservoir.

Explore Western heritage: Downtown Dodge City attractions are easily accessible from nearby campgrounds. "Easy set up reservation was ready for us, even though the office was closed. They left instructions and map to park in our spot. Great location near downtown," reports Charlene P. about staying at Dodge City KOA.

Biking trails: The lake areas provide cycling opportunities around the water. "Hiking and biking around the lake is good. Biting flies were terrible but after I broke out the fly swatter they learned I meant business!" shares Brian F. about Meade City Park.

What campers like

Spacious site layouts: Many campsites feature wide spacing with grassy areas. "This Campground has one of the most separated sites of the places we've stayed. Most of the sites at the rear part of the park have spaces separated by one's own grassy area and trees, where the picnic table is situated," explains Grace D. about Gunsmoke RV Park.

Concrete pads: Several campgrounds feature durable concrete parking areas. "Nice large concrete pads. Plenty of grassy area behind site 27 for kids to play," notes Dustin S. about the camping experience at Dodge City KOA.

Security features: Gated campgrounds provide additional safety. "Nice gated campground, not to quiet, busy highway right there. Great for an overnight stay, too pricey for anything more than that!" states Deb W. about the security setup at Gunsmoke RV Park.

What you should know

Site selection impacts noise levels: Highway proximity affects quietness. "Front section of spots 1-43 are close to the road and it is very noisy. They made these front sites big rig friendly by using the site next to yours for unhooking your tow or towed vehicle," advises Missy A. about site selection at Gunsmoke RV Park.

Shower facilities vary: Bathroom and shower conditions differ between locations. "This campground was on track for 5-stars until I used the shower facilities the next morning. I used the shower building that had the toilet and vanity all in one room; the water pressure got weaker the hotter the water was and the electrical outlets don't work," reports Meghan B. about Horsethief Reservoir.

Seasonal weather considerations: Summer brings insect activity while winter affects water systems. "It doesn't have much if any shade, so bring your own. Otherwise it is a great place to stay, especially if you have a boat," advises Shawn about Horsethief Reservoir.

Tips for camping with families

Free zoo access: Take advantage of complimentary attractions near camping areas. "Close to downtown tourist attractions. Next door to water park and city park with a free zoo. The campground is clean and well maintained," notes Kelly B. about amenities near glamping options.

Water park proximity: Budget-friendly water recreation facilities complement camping experiences. "Large concrete pads! Behind our site and a bunch others is a large grassy area perfect for kids to play. Within walking distance is a super affordable water park, free zoo, playground, and Boot Hill Museum," shares Samantha S. about Meade City Park.

Reserve early for prime sites: Popular camping areas fill quickly, especially on weekends. "Spots can fill up quick so be sure you call ahead. However, there are plenty of primitive spots that have room most weekends," advises Cody about planning visits to Horsethief Reservoir.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for big rigs: Specific campground sections better accommodate large vehicles. "Sites 50 through 82 are in the back away from the highway and very quiet. 33 through 44 are back in sites and front the highway and are noisier. 50 to 82 have 20 feet of grassy space between sites, I highly recommend these sites," advises Paul Y. about Gunsmoke RV Park.

Dump station access: Free waste disposal facilities available at some parks. "There is a dump station and potable water there, free as well. No electric hook ups. Very simple, small park. I would guess there's space for no more than 5-6 RVs but it's off the road a bit and not busy when we were there," notes Patti M. about basic facilities.

Multi-sewer connections: Some sites offer flexible hookup positioning. "Some sites have multiple sewer dumps so your positioning of your rig is less of a problem," explains Paul Y., highlighting a practical feature at Gunsmoke RV Park for easier setup.
