Ford State Fishing Lake

This free campground provides about a dozen gravel sites arranged in a loop, each equipped with picnic tables and fire pits. Managed by Ford County Public Works, the sites sit alongside Ford State Fishing Lake within the wildlife area. GPS navigation can be tricky, as some devices direct visitors to incorrect locations, so using specific coordinates helps ensure proper arrival.

The gravel sites present leveling challenges, with several campers noting significant slopes that make setup difficult. Evan C. found his second site "unable to stake into the ground, but there was a mown strip next to the site that was easy staking." The access road shows some rutting along the hillside edges, though most vehicles navigate without issue. Vault toilets serve the area, though their condition varies and they require a walk from most campsites.

Weekend nights can bring local party groups, while weekday visits typically offer more solitude. The lake serves as a popular fishing destination during daylight hours, with most day-use visitors departing by evening. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, and posted signs warn against swimming due to harmful bacteria concerns.

For additional camping options, visitors can explore campgrounds just outside Wright or check nearby Ford Lake State Park Campground. This spot works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with basic facilities and uneven terrain.

A free lakeside campground that offers quiet weekday camping with scenic views. Many visitors reported significant site leveling issues and consistently poor restroom conditions. Weekend stays may involve noise from local gatherings.

Not on the weekend

My girlfriend and I were driving across country and spent the day in Dodge city. We were looking for a place close by and this Lakeside campsite popped up. Our GPS took us to a different place so be careful when you are trying to find this lake. It is actually a very nice little public campground. It’s fantastic that it’s free. We found a very nice campsite that was apparently more level than other people have found here, and set up camp. Unfortunately, for us, we stayed on a Saturday night. And apparently locals like to come out and party. We had a group about 50 feet away who wanted to fiesta all night instead of siesta all night. They kept us up until 3 AM. My suggestion would be to stay here during the week and not on a Saturday night.

Established spots, albeit sloped

08/10/2025

Use the coordinates here to navigate to about a dozen sites in a loop. All coarse gravel with picnic table and fire pits. I stayed in the second one on the left going clockwise around the loop, and was unable to stake into the ground, but there was a mown strip next to the site that was easy staking. Road is a little rutted along the sides, since it's on a hill, but navigable without issue unless you have really low clearance I would guess.

Nice spot

This place is set up like a picnic area more than a camping area; no electric, no water. no particular camp spots, complete boondocking style. A favorite local fishing spot, but cleared out by nightfall. No flush toilets and pods were pretty filthy while I'm here, but it's early in the season. Surely they will have them cleaned up and window replaced in men's before season really starts. The toilets are the reason for just avg rating. Everything else was very nice.

A dozen empty sites

An obvious camping loop with picnic tables had one small car parked in a spot when I got here. He woke up and drove away. I saw another couple people sitting in a car at the stop sign. Looked suspicious to me. The flattest most level site I could find is barely adequate. All the rest have quite a tilt.

Clean, quiet,no frills, no bugs!

Small park, very quiet and nice, right off the lake. No facilities, has dumpster . Bathroom dirty - so only 4 stars. Just side road parking, but enough to park a trailer. Amazingly, even if parking is right near the lake - no bugs!!!

Steep and not very RV friendly, but great view

Not much of a lake, right now? Kinda a puddle, but it’s an awesome place and bet it will fill up nicely. Sign says, harmful bacteria in water, so do t swim or let your dogs in the water. And kinda steep and not many of the sites are level. It’s January, so I’m the only crazy one here.

Siteone of them.

Free Camping

I stayed two different nights this week. I was there Tuesday night and Friday night. Tuesday night I had the place to myself. Friday night just had two other rigs there. I wouldn't recommend this place to big rigs. The vault toilets were trashed Tuesday and out of TP. Friday the trash was picked up and TP was stocked. Vault toilets were a bit gross, but they did their job. Toilets are a bit of a walk from the camp sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ford County Lake State Park good for camping?

Ford State Fishing Lake offers a primitive camping experience with some basic amenities. The campground features gravel sites equipped with picnic tables and fire pits arranged in a loop around the lake. While it provides peaceful lakeside camping with nice views, facilities are limited and maintenance can be inconsistent. The vault toilets are sometimes poorly maintained or dirty. The campground tends to be quiet with few other campers, making it good for those seeking solitude. However, it's best suited for campers who are comfortable with basic accommodations and appreciate nature over amenities.

Is there free camping available near Ford County Lake?

Yes, camping at Ford State Fishing Lake is free. The campground offers primitive boondocking-style camping with no designated spots, electricity, or water hookups. Sites include picnic tables and fire pits on gravel surfaces. While the camping is free, the tradeoff is minimal facilities - only vault toilets are available, and their cleanliness varies. For those seeking free camping near Dodge City, this is a convenient option, especially for self-contained campers who don't require amenities.

Can you RV camp at Ford County Lake near Dodge City?

RV camping is possible at Ford State Fishing Lake, but with significant limitations. The sites are not developed specifically for RVs - they're gravel areas with no hookups (no electric, water, or sewer). Many sites aren't level, which can be challenging for larger rigs. Several campers specifically note that big rigs are not recommended due to the site conditions and limited space. For RVers seeking a free, basic overnight spot near Dodge City, it can work for smaller, self-contained units that don't need hookups. There's a camping loop with approximately a dozen sites arranged around the lake.

What activities can you do at Ford County Lake besides camping?

Fishing is the primary activity at Ford State Fishing Lake, as it's a popular local fishing spot. Visitors can enjoy shoreline fishing around the lake, though water levels can vary seasonally. The area also offers opportunities for wildlife viewing and birdwatching. With picnic tables available, it's a good spot for day use and picnicking. Note that swimming is not recommended due to potential harmful bacteria in the water. The surrounding landscape provides a peaceful setting for relaxation and enjoying Kansas scenery.
