    Gunsmoke RV Park

Compared to other campgrounds in Kansas, maybe 4 stars.

Keep in mind, we haven’t found any five-star campgrounds in Kansas, and a shortage of campgrounds in general, so we were glad to find this perfectly adequate, safe space with level gravel pads close together. Full hookups. The best thing about it is its proximity to Dodge City.

    Cimarron RV Park

    Great for the night

Needed a place to stop for the night with electric since it’s 95 in Kansas in July. This was right off 400 on our way out of Dodge City. $25 a night with water and electric. Small campground but has what we needed. Bonus it has a laundry mat. Second bonus there is a horse farm right behind the campground.

    Not on the weekend

My girlfriend and I were driving across country and spent the day in Dodge city. We were looking for a place close by and this Lakeside campsite popped up. Our GPS took us to a different place so be careful when you are trying to find this lake. It is actually a very nice little public campground. It’s fantastic that it’s free. We found a very nice campsite that was apparently more level than other people have found here, and set up camp. Unfortunately, for us, we stayed on a Saturday night. And apparently locals like to come out and party. We had a group about 50 feet away who wanted to fiesta all night instead of siesta all night. They kept us up until 3 AM. My suggestion would be to stay here during the week and not on a Saturday night.

    Dodge City KOA

    Clean, Quiet and New Campground

Campground was a little difficult to find the entrance to, but once we found it we had no problems with the rest of our stay.  Campground was quite and fully paved.  The kids enjoyed riding their bikes and scooters while we relaxed at our spot.  Plenty of room to pull in and out of spots.  The common buildings were all new and very well kept.  Highly recommend if you are in Dodge City.

    Gunsmoke RV Park

    Noisy

We stayed here in June for two nights on a road trip north. Front section of spots 1-43 are close to the road and it is very noisy. They made these front sites big rig friendly by using the site next to yours for unhooking your tow or towed vehicle. We were put in the front section due to a large work crew taking up a lot of spaces in the back section.  We could not open our awning in the first assigned spot, so the staff was accommodating and moved us over one spot. Come to find out, it is very windy here, so awnings are not used very often. We would highly recommend getting a site in the back. Sites 50-80. Less noise, long pull throughs and nice wide grass areas. The wifi was not very strong or was too busy, so we used our own hot spot. This is conveniently located close to Dodge City attractions.

    Gunsmoke RV Park

    WARNING!!! VERY RUDE OWNER’S!!

Before I do my review here, I want to point out that we own a small Toy Poodle and are very conscience of our dogs bio footprint in the environment and always pick up after he uses the bathroom. So here is our experience that really upset our family and my in-laws. I was walking my dog to the grass area and noticed my dog was wanting to go to the bathroom on the gravel. I pulled my dog quickly over to the grass area and picked up his waste to throw away. Little did I realize my dog had dropped a piece of poop before getting to the grass, I didn’t see it but the owner said he watched us and saw my dog poop in the gravel without me picking it up. I returned to my camper and 15 min later I receive a knock at my door and the owner tells me that I left my dogs poop and here it is. He slammed his shovel against the gravel on the ground, dropping a ping ball size poop on my front steps. I felt really bad that I didn’t see it and apologized but as soon as I did the owner tells me this is my first and only warning, if it happens again then we’ll be gone! We apologized a second time and the owner just stared at us angrily and walked away without acknowledging the apology or saying anything further. Me, my wife, my son and my mother and father in-law were jaw dropping shocked. We had stayed here several times before, made this our campground of choice in Dodge City when ever we visit and we’ve never had any issues. We pay good money to stay in their campground every year so a little bit of couth goes a long way in customer service. I was mortified that anyone who owns a campground would talk to someone and threaten to kick them out because of an honest and rather minor mistake. All he had to do was stop by and tell me he saw my dog poop in the road and to please double check your dog while walking him. What further put salt in the womb is when me and my wife went to the front desk to sign in from the night before and we confronted the owner that we didn’t know that our dog had pooped on the lot and again apologized. We then told him that all he had to do was be nice about it and he responded, “I was nice about it”. We argued politely for a minute that he was not nice and there’s no reason to talk to us like we’re little children. We finally gave up rationalizing with him and left. All over town and in front of their campground it’s advertised that their campground is for sale so maybe he’s having a very bad morning or there’s some added stress because their campground is for sale or maybe it’s the “I don’t care” attitude now but one thing is for sure, my family and my in-laws will never make this our weekend home for our mini vacations anymore. My advise is go to the brand new KOA campground right up the street where they don’t treat the customers like this, who actually care how they treat their customers. Plus it’s a heck of a lot nicer with concrete pads, new and very nice facilities. GunSmoke campground is very noisy because of the highway it sits right up against with very crowded campsites on the front half of the campground. They show pictures on the internet of the rear newer addition but not the crowed older section.

Guide to Dodge City

Ford State Fishing Lake provides free primitive camping with minimal amenities about 20 miles northeast of Dodge City. The campground features gravel sites with picnic tables and fire pits though many visitors note the sites are unlevel. Local water restrictions may impact lake levels during drought periods, with temperatures in the region regularly exceeding 100°F in summer and dropping below freezing in winter.

What to do

Explore downtown attractions: Dodge City KOA is within walking distance of the Boot Hill Museum, water park, and city park with free zoo. "Within walking distance is a super affordable water park, free zoo, playground, and Boot Hill Museum," according to Samantha S., who appreciated the convenience for families.

Fishing opportunities: Ford State Fishing Lake offers fishing access with primitive camping options. One camper noted, "A favorite local fishing spot, but cleared out by nightfall," making it ideal for those seeking quieter evenings after a day of fishing.

Casino gaming: For travelers looking to try their luck, Boot Hill Casino permits overnight RV parking with bathroom access. Hunter C. shared, "Good spot to crash for the night on those long travel days. HUGE concrete parking lot. Pretty level. Well lighted and felt safe."

What campers like

Spacious campsite layouts: Gunsmoke RV Park receives high marks for site separation. Grace D. explained, "This Campground has one of the most separated sites of the places we've stayed. Most of the sites at the rear part of the park have spaces separated by one's own grassy area and trees."

Concrete pads for stability: Many campers appreciate the level concrete pads at Dodge City KOA during windy conditions. "Nice large concrete pads. Plenty of grassy area behind site 27 for kids to play," according to Dustin S., highlighting the practical benefit for families.

Budget-friendly options: Horse Thief Reservoir offers reasonable rates for its amenities. Meghan B. noted, "The price is very reasonable for what you get here, too," despite some shower facility issues.

What you should know

Train noise considerations: Some campgrounds near Dodge City are affected by railroad noise. A KOA visitor reported, "I could toss a rock and hit passing trains," suggesting light sleepers may want to request sites away from the tracks.

Site selection strategy: When staying at Gunsmoke RV Park, request back sites for a quieter experience. Missy A. advised, "Sites 50 through 82 are in the back away from the highway and very quiet. 33 through 44 are back in sites and front the highway and are noisier."

Weekend vs. weekday stays: Ford State Fishing Lake experiences different crowd patterns throughout the week. Jack T. recommended, "My suggestion would be to stay here during the week and not on a Saturday night," after local parties kept his group awake until 3 AM.

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation options: Horse Thief Reservoir provides multiple water activities for families. "Beautiful lake to fish, swim, and ski," reported Shawn, though he cautioned about limited shade.

Budget entertainment: Families staying at Dodge City KOA benefit from nearby affordable attractions. Charlene P. mentioned the "Great location near downtown" and noted the water park was within easy walking distance.

Animal viewing opportunities: Cimarron RV Park offers unexpected animal sightings for children. Nancy B. shared, "Second bonus there is a horse farm right behind the campground," providing natural entertainment for kids.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for big rigs: Blue RV Park accommodates large RVs with pull-through sites. Connie O. recommended it as "an easy off-on with large rig-friendly pull-through pads," perfect for overnight stays.

Overnight parking alternatives: RVers seeking free overnight options can use Boot Hill Casino parking lot. Trevor H. noted, "Very well lit, cameras throughout the lot, felt very safe overall," though he mentioned bathrooms require "a hike" to access.

Utility considerations: Many RV parks near Dodge City offer full hookups, but Ford State Fishing Lake has no facilities. Lena H. explained, "This place is set up like a picnic area more than a camping area; no electric, no water, no particular camp spots, complete boondocking style."

Pet friendly considerations: Most pet-friendly camping near Dodge City, Kansas requires leashed pets with proper waste disposal. Prairie Wind RV Park accommodates pets but lacks on-site restrooms, which camper Larry confirmed: "We wanted to stay, but we do not have a restroom in our camper, and there is not one on site."
