Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Garden City, KS

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Beymer Water Recreation Park accommodates campers with pets at its $10 per night sites with water and electric hookups. Most pet-friendly campgrounds near Garden City include Prairie Wind RV Park, Cimarron RV Park, and Horsethief Reservoir, all maintaining leash requirements for dogs. Each campsite offers covered picnic tables with most providing full hookups for RVs. Small parks like Beymer maintain grassy sites that dogs appreciate during extended stays. Horsethief Reservoir provides additional amenities including showers, toilets, and dump stations while allowing both tent camping and RVs. Many locations have implemented improved facilities recently, with Horsethief adding cement pads, picnic table covers, and windbreaks that benefit pet owners during Kansas weather changes.

Horsethief Reservoir offers water access for dogs who enjoy swimming, with fish jumping regularly visible from shorelines. Pet owners should note that many campgrounds in the region have limited shade, so bringing portable shade structures benefits dogs during hot Kansas summer months. Despite being relatively new, Horsethief Reservoir has planted trees that will eventually provide more shade coverage for campers with pets. Grocery stores near campgrounds like Cimarron RV Park provide convenient access to pet supplies. The prairie landscape surrounding most sites offers open space for dog walking, though owners should remain vigilant for wildlife. Winter camping requires preparation as some facilities like Beymer turn off water during colder months while maintaining electrical hookups that help heat campers with pets.

    Horse Thief Reservoir

    Great little getaway

Growing up in southwest Kansas it is difficult to take a quick weekend trip anywhere close. Horsethief sure changed that. A quick hour drive from Garden City and you can be on the water or setting up your camper. Spots can fill up quick so be sure you call ahead. However, there are plenty of primitive spots that have room most weekends.

Circle Drive — Historic Lake Scott State Park

    It doesn't look like Kansas

This was our last stop in our Tour de Kansas. The landscape felt more like the west than the flatlands of Kansas we had come to love. We pulled in on a Thurs. The campground was almost empty. Buy Friday afternoon, it was pretty full. By Sunday afternoon, we had it to our self again. We got a pull through site with 30 and 50 amp. Only 1 shower house was open in early April. But, it was 4 individual rooms, not common area setup.

The lake was small but very pretty, easy to kayak, SUP and fish. There are a few short trails to hike. As other have mentioned, there are amazing sites within 20 miles. The Little Jerusalem SP is a must. In the area, we saw turkey, owl, lots of buzzards, geese, albino buffelo and more cows than i have seen in one place. On Saturday, the local car club drove their vintage cars to the park for a pop up car show. The people were very nice. Garden City is about 40 miles away and offers everything you could want, brewery, good food, shopping galore, etc.

    Great Place

This was a great VERY quiet get away for me and the wife. Not a lot going on in this area during the winter time but this was the perfect place for us to unplug. Nestled just outside Garner State Park has some great scenery. The dog park and surrounding area could have used some more grass in and around it to help keep the mud out of the RV but the dogs enjoyed themselves. All in all a great place for a get away if you're looking to unplug.

    Great Surprise

Driving through Kansas and coming up on this park and it's views made it a great spot to stop at along the way. Able to pull up to campsites and park next to your tent area. Everything was clean and my spot was a nice wake up view looking across the lake. Only caught a catfish while there but still great fun. Wish I could've gotten video of the thunderstorm that rolled through in the distance. Overall though, great hiking around the lake and good spots. Just a short drive to town also if you need to pick anything up.

    Gunsmoke RV Park

Compared to other campgrounds in Kansas, maybe 4 stars.

Keep in mind, we haven’t found any five-star campgrounds in Kansas, and a shortage of campgrounds in general, so we were glad to find this perfectly adequate, safe space with level gravel pads close together. Full hookups. The best thing about it is its proximity to Dodge City.

    Prairie Wind RV Park

    All the Comforts

This is a tiny (5 pull-thru slots) RV park run by the county in Montezuma, Kansas. Perfect for an overnight stay, it has 30 and 50 amp hookups, sewer and water. All for only $20/night. Each slot is a gravel drive with a concrete pad on the side that has a concrete picnic table. It’s right off KS-56, but we didn’t find it too noisy. I would definitely stay here again if passing by this way. Even has the added bonus of a small adjacent field where we were able to kite our paramotor wing for a bit.

Elm Grove — Historic Lake Scott State Park

    Kansas Oasis

There is not a lot to see on the flat western plains of Kansas and you would not see this state park either if you didn’t know it was there. This lake is like a sunken oasis of trees and water. The area itself was great! There’s even a few histoical sites to visit and it is close to Monument Rocks, which is what bought us to Kansas.

The campground, however, is just ok. Perhaps it would’ve been better if they had rain to green up the grass, but it was mostly brown in June when we camped there. They have a large selection of sites and on a Monday night in June, we had many choices available for tent camping. It appeared that most who camp here have an rv and those spaces looked about full. Thankfully, those are two different areas of the campground because they were packed into a parking lot style campground. The tent area probably would’ve looked packed in too since the sites are small, but with only a handful of tents, we had some space.

One thing that did limit our choice of sites was a LARGE herd of geese that covered all of the lakeside sites as well as the next row in. I didn’t want to set up in bird poop in the dry grass so the sites with a decent view were out. We did luck out and find site 2 of the Flatland area which was up above the water line so the geese couldn’t swim up and walk in. Site 2 had a great view of the lake and was set apart from the other sites along with site 1. Site 1 would’ve been the better site but it was occupied by a tent that appeared to have been abandoned. Site 2 was not level by any means, in fact it sloped quite a bit compared to the rest of the sites. There was no tent pads, which would’ve helped a lot for this site. We just set up so our heads would be at the high end and it worked. It was too nice of a view to let a bumpy sloping site stop us!

The campground has a host and everyone was quiet for the night. We slept pretty well, other than the high humidity of Kansas.

The bathhouse left a lot to be desired. A good cleaning to remove dead bugs would’ve went a long way. A fresh coat of paint would make it inviting. It looked like nobody had checked on its’ condition for many years. We were hoping to use the showers, but they were no cleaner and had an odd design with no doors or shower curtains. The lighting was very dim as well, making it all look a little too creepy for a shower there. A fresh coat of paint, brighter lighting, some shower curtains, and a good scrub down would make this facility SO much better! We also checked the other batthouse on the opposite side of the lake and it was the same way...only creepier because there was one lone rv camped near it.

Overall, I would not camp here again unless I read some reviews indicating the the bathhouse has been improved. It’s not a dealbreaker to not have a shower, but if this campground had been fuller, the geese all over the sites may have been. If you have an rv and pay for full hookups, you might like this campground. If you are tent camping, keep looking.

    Gunsmoke RV Park

    WARNING!!! VERY RUDE OWNER’S!!

Before I do my review here, I want to point out that we own a small Toy Poodle and are very conscience of our dogs bio footprint in the environment and always pick up after he uses the bathroom. So here is our experience that really upset our family and my in-laws. I was walking my dog to the grass area and noticed my dog was wanting to go to the bathroom on the gravel. I pulled my dog quickly over to the grass area and picked up his waste to throw away. Little did I realize my dog had dropped a piece of poop before getting to the grass, I didn’t see it but the owner said he watched us and saw my dog poop in the gravel without me picking it up. I returned to my camper and 15 min later I receive a knock at my door and the owner tells me that I left my dogs poop and here it is. He slammed his shovel against the gravel on the ground, dropping a ping ball size poop on my front steps. I felt really bad that I didn’t see it and apologized but as soon as I did the owner tells me this is my first and only warning, if it happens again then we’ll be gone! We apologized a second time and the owner just stared at us angrily and walked away without acknowledging the apology or saying anything further. Me, my wife, my son and my mother and father in-law were jaw dropping shocked. We had stayed here several times before, made this our campground of choice in Dodge City when ever we visit and we’ve never had any issues. We pay good money to stay in their campground every year so a little bit of couth goes a long way in customer service. I was mortified that anyone who owns a campground would talk to someone and threaten to kick them out because of an honest and rather minor mistake. All he had to do was stop by and tell me he saw my dog poop in the road and to please double check your dog while walking him. What further put salt in the womb is when me and my wife went to the front desk to sign in from the night before and we confronted the owner that we didn’t know that our dog had pooped on the lot and again apologized. We then told him that all he had to do was be nice about it and he responded, “I was nice about it”. We argued politely for a minute that he was not nice and there’s no reason to talk to us like we’re little children. We finally gave up rationalizing with him and left. All over town and in front of their campground it’s advertised that their campground is for sale so maybe he’s having a very bad morning or there’s some added stress because their campground is for sale or maybe it’s the “I don’t care” attitude now but one thing is for sure, my family and my in-laws will never make this our weekend home for our mini vacations anymore. My advise is go to the brand new KOA campground right up the street where they don’t treat the customers like this, who actually care how they treat their customers. Plus it’s a heck of a lot nicer with concrete pads, new and very nice facilities. GunSmoke campground is very noisy because of the highway it sits right up against with very crowded campsites on the front half of the campground. They show pictures on the internet of the rear newer addition but not the crowed older section.

Guide to Garden City

Camping options near Garden City, Kansas range from basic electric hookups to full-service lakeside facilities. The region sits at approximately 2,800 feet elevation with a semi-arid climate characterized by hot summers, cold winters, and persistent winds that sweep across the open prairie landscape. Several campgrounds have planted young trees that will eventually provide more shade as they mature in this naturally open terrain.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Horsethief Reservoir, the fishing is active with visible results. As one camper noted, "I don't fish but see and hear fish jumping all the time" even though "it's not a big lake." The reservoir provides both shoreline access and boat launches.

Historic exploration: The area around Scott State Park offers unique geological formations. "Close to Monument Rocks, Jerusalem Badlands & New Jerusalem Badlands SP," reports one visitor, while another adds that the area has "amazing sites nearby...Jerusalem Badlands & Monument Rocks about 15-20 minutes north off of US 83."

Water activities: When temperatures rise in summer, several campgrounds offer water access. Scott State Park features "a spring fed lake and shady cottonwood trees, mesas and rock formations" with "a great day kayaking and staying in water to keep cooled off."

What campers like

Affordability: Budget-conscious campers appreciate the value at Beymer Water Recreation Park. As one camper stated, "It's flat, easy to get to.. bathrooms are just okay. Not the cleanest, but it's something. Each spot has water and electric. Plus a covered shelter with picnic tables. For $10 can't beat it."

Privacy options: Some campgrounds offer more secluded sites. At Gunsmoke RV Park, "Sites 50 through 82 are in the back away from the highway and very quiet" with "20 feet of grassy space between sites." Another reviewer confirmed this campground "has one of the most separated sites of the places we've stayed."

Year-round access: Several dog-friendly campgrounds near Garden City remain open through winter. A visitor to Beymer noted, "We came through in November and the water was turned off. It has a bathroom but we didn't use it so I can't report on its condition. The park was clean."

What you should know

Limited shade: Most campgrounds in the region lack mature trees. At Horsethief Reservoir, "It doesn't have much if any shade, so bring your own." This campground is "new so the trees haven't grown to provide a ton of shade yet."

Weather impacts: Western Kansas experiences significant wind and temperature fluctuations. At Circle Drive — Historic Lake Scott State Park, campers note that "sites are a little close to each other" and when staying at Beymer, "it was very windy when we arrived, found a great wind block."

Facility variations: Bathroom and shower facilities vary widely between campgrounds. One camper at Horsethief Reservoir reported, "The water pressure got weaker the hotter the water was and the electrical outlets don't work, so I couldn't blow dry my hair."

Tips for camping with families

Water parks: Families with children can enjoy additional water features beyond lakes. The Dodge City KOA is "within walking distance of a super affordable water park, free zoo, playground, and Boot Hill Museum." Multiple reviewers mention this benefit with one noting there are "large concrete pads" and "plenty of grassy area behind site 27 for kids to play."

Lake access: For swimming during hot summer days, Scott State Park offers "an easy walk to the swim beach" and the lake is "small and quiet with fishers and kayakers."

Educational opportunities: Several campgrounds are near historic sites. Dodge City KOA is "close to downtown tourist attractions" including Boot Hill Museum which showcases regional history.

Tips from RVers

Winter preparations: RV campers should prepare for seasonal changes. At Beymer Water Recreation Park, "In very late November, the water is turned off. But electricity and a flat spot of dirt for 10 bucks is a great deal."

Cell coverage: Working remotely is possible at many campgrounds. At Cimarron RV Park, one camper noted it "has wifi" and is "close to a small town" with a "grocery store across the street." Most parks in the region report adequate cell service.

Site selection: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Garden City offer premium sites worth requesting. At Gunsmoke RV Park, "Sites 50 to 82 have 20 feet of grassy space between sites" and "also have trees to provide shade. Some sites have multiple sewer dumps so your positioning of your rig is less of a problem."
