Best RV Parks & Resorts near Thor, IA

Several RV-friendly parks surround Thor, Iowa with varied hookup options. Oakwood RV Park in Clear Lake offers full-hookup sites with 50-amp electrical service and accommodates large motorhomes from mid-April through mid-October. Approximately 25 miles southwest, The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park provides both 30-amp and 50-amp sites on grassy, level pull-throughs with electric hookups, though water and sewer connections are not available at individual sites. Lizard Creek Ranch Camping in Fort Dodge features full hookup capabilities for big rigs with water, sewer, and electric connections. Dolliver Memorial State Park, located near Lehigh, maintains RV sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical hookups and accommodates larger vehicles. "Sites are level with picnic tables and fire rings. Sites range from shady to sunny and the reservation website depicts the sites with a small photo and details about the amount of slope and shade."

Seasonal availability varies across these RV destinations, with most parks operating from April through October or early December. Kennedy County Park offers 50-amp electrical service along with water and sewer hookups but lacks space for larger RVs. Most parks in the region provide dump stations for RV waste disposal, though availability of on-site services like propane filling is limited. Cell coverage fluctuates throughout the area - Brushy Creek State Recreation Area visitors report variable service with Verizon showing 0-2 bars of 4G. Many RV parks in the region operate on a first-come, first-served basis, particularly at smaller facilities like The Grotto of the Redemption, while larger state parks generally offer reservation systems for securing spots during peak summer months. Pet policies are generally permissive, with most facilities allowing dogs with standard leash requirements.

The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park

    Very Nice, Excellent Value

The Grotto is interesting and inspiring. Admission is free. Two adjacent camping areas are partially shaded and will accommodate rigs of all sizes. I counted (8) 50 amp and (16) 30 amp sites. Rest rooms, showers, fresh water and a dump station are provided. The cost is $20 per night. Sites are offered on a first come first served basis. Thirty amp sites are on lush grass and include a view of a the grotto, a pond and surrounding residences. The 50 amp area offers more privacy, gravel pull through parking and more convenient shower and rest room access but a lightly used rail line runs by.

    Dolliver Memorial State Park Campground

    Beautiful and tranquil

Dolliver State Park was our maiden voyage in our travel trailer and it was obvious we were pitiful newbies! The park's beauty and tranquility did get disturbed a couple times when our dogs got loose (newbs!). The park staff were friendly and very helpful as were our fellow campers. The sites are mostly level with picnic tables and fire rings. Sites range from shady to sunny and the reservation website depicts the sites with a small photo and details about the amount of slope and shade. Cell service was good but no WiFi without a hotspot for us. We had fun, learned a lot and plan to camp here again!

The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park

Nice place to stop while visiting the Grotto

We stayed at the Grotto of the Redemption RV park for two nights. We were in our class C while slowly making our way across the country. We had no problems getting a spot here. There are two areas. One is very close to a train line, which runs infrequently. Sites are grass, level, and reasonably well maintained. All sites are pull through. Only electrical hookups are available at the sites. This is in good condition. There is fresh water and a dump station available. Each site has a nice grassy area and there are plenty of large trees. Staff was very friendly and helpful. There was a park nearby with a playground.

The RV park is near the Grotto. The Grotto is a fascinating achievement worth a look if you are in the area.

We had 2 bar LTE with Verizon. Our hotspot was usable and performed very well. Campground wifi was not available.

We enjoyed our brief stay at this campground. We will stay again when traveling this way.

    Spring Lake County Park

    Family Tradition

We love to return here every year!

Recently updated two-way fresh-fill/santiary dump station. There is Ice Cube Consessions and the skating rink from Memorial Day through Labor Day every year. Great long-term hosts really make this park feel like going home.

    Joe Sheldon County Park

    Beautiful hiking!

This is a lovely and expanding park. Spacious, level pull through sites with full hookups. Decent Verizon coverage. Shower houses could use updates.

    Pilot Knob State Park Campground

Camping in the woods near town

Located by New Ulm, MN this campground has plenty of activities in the park or very near the park. Plenty of hiking trails, playground for the kids, and an amazing sand bottom swimming pond surrounded by sand beach. Golf is also nearby at The New Ulm Country Club which is open to the public. Nice level sites with electric, picnic tables and fire rings.

    McIntosh Woods State Park Campground

    Nice Small Campground near lake

Not a big campground. Sites arranged in a circle around a clean shower house. Potable water. Only 2 non-electric sites. Most sites level. Sites are close to each other, not offering much in the way of privacy. Camped here on the off season, so it wasn't crowded. Short walk to nice lake & marsh. Walking trails. Camped here during waterfowl hunting season, so there were several gunshots nearby at around sunrise. 3 bars T-Mobile. About 5 miles west of I-35; good place to stop for one night. Electric sites,: $18; non-electric $14. Would stay here again.

    Ledges State Park Campground

More of a nice park for locals than a destination for out of towners

We stayed here while passing through on a road trip. It was easy to get a camp site. We opted for a hike-in site to try for a bit of seclusion. The site was nice. We didn't have other campers near by. The hiking trails are very short but there is a bike path that evidently connects several parks in the region. It is a family friendly park with bathrooms, spot for trash, and even shower station. There is a kayak launch point off Lower Ledges Road. The water was calm. This is more of a park for locals to picnic, fish and kayak than a destination for out of towners. It is a quiet park that had a lot of local dog walkers and would be a peaceful place to stay with the kids if stopping through the area. There is a playground on site and you can fish out of the Des Moines River.
