The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park

Nice place to stop while visiting the Grotto

We stayed at the Grotto of the Redemption RV park for two nights. We were in our class C while slowly making our way across the country. We had no problems getting a spot here. There are two areas. One is very close to a train line, which runs infrequently. Sites are grass, level, and reasonably well maintained. All sites are pull through. Only electrical hookups are available at the sites. This is in good condition. There is fresh water and a dump station available. Each site has a nice grassy area and there are plenty of large trees. Staff was very friendly and helpful. There was a park nearby with a playground.

The RV park is near the Grotto. The Grotto is a fascinating achievement worth a look if you are in the area.

We had 2 bar LTE with Verizon. Our hotspot was usable and performed very well. Campground wifi was not available.

We enjoyed our brief stay at this campground. We will stay again when traveling this way.

    Pilot Knob State Park Campground

Layout of campground would be challenging if full

General: A mixture of tent (non-electric) and electric sites, mostly arranged in several rows.

Site Quality: Mixed. Not all sites are level, and most do not have delineated parking pads (there is a small pavement indent to show where to access the site). A fire pit and picnic table complete the site. Most of the sites are too close together for our liking, however, when we were there (a Monday at the end of August, the day before school started), we were only one of three sites occupied so for our stay it didn’t matter.

Bathhouse: Basic but clean. My biggest complaint is there were no hooks or shelves for toiletries by the sinks. The showers looked nice but we did not use them.

Activities: Horseback riding (there are trails for this), hiking, fishing. Although we did see several trailheads, I did not have a map so didn’t explore them. There is an observation tower, but it is a two-mile walk/drive from the campground (on paved roads; I didn’t try to find hiking trails to get there).

Misc: A shout-out to the great host, Pam, who greeted us as we arrived. The observation tower, entrance gates, and picnic shelter were all constructed by the CCC and were beautiful. It almost seemed like the campground was an afterthought as it is outside the entrance gates and nowhere near the tower. The layout of the campground would be challenging if all sites were occupied.

    Ledges State Park Campground

    Don't fall off the ledge!

One of my favorite locations to camp in Iowa as a Boy Scout growing up was Ledges State Park. Since I hadn't been back in years, I decided to check it out and spend a night camping there. It's close to how I remember it.

The campground has a good picnic area, restrooms, and an excellent trail. It's also inexpensive.

What I enjoy most about this park compared to others in Iowa are the sandstone ledges and the slopes on the trail. There are some excellent views, so make sure your phone has enough battery to take photos (unlike me). I also spent a lot of time off the trail. It isn't too hard to get around. I'm not one who enjoys staying at a park that is mostly flat, so this is definitely a good place in Iowa for me to camp.

If you are looking for a cool place to camp within an hour of Des Moines, you should seriously consider this park.

    Ledges State Park Campground

    Beautiful hikes. Prepare for coons.

One of the more beautiful places to camp in Iowa. Awesome hiking trails and really well-shaded campsites. The hike in spots are great if you like privacy and being in the middle of the woods - but you don’t want to be THAT far from your car.

Beware of the raccoons. They’re plentiful and crazy smart here. We had one open our cooler, steal an egg from the cartoon - without disturbing anything else. Honestly, I was impressed! But some of our friends had them rip through their tents to get at food - not as impressive.

    Ledges State Park Campground

More of a nice park for locals than a destination for out of towners

We stayed here while passing through on a road trip. It was easy to get a camp site. We opted for a hike-in site to try for a bit of seclusion. The site was nice. We didn't have other campers near by. The hiking trails are very short but there is a bike path that evidently connects several parks in the region. It is a family friendly park with bathrooms, spot for trash, and even shower station. There is a kayak launch point off Lower Ledges Road. The water was calm. This is more of a park for locals to picnic, fish and kayak than a destination for out of towners. It is a quiet park that had a lot of local dog walkers and would be a peaceful place to stay with the kids if stopping through the area. There is a playground on site and you can fish out of the Des Moines River.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Kennedy County Park offers multiple fishing spots with boat ramps. "Multiple kids parks, beach area, fishing areas with boat ramps, trails, kids butterfly garden," notes Megan H. about Kennedy County Park.

Hiking trails: Ledges State Park features challenging terrain with sandstone formations. "The hiking trails are cool. I would say it was a challenging hike. A lot of up and down terrain, stone steps, etc. The ledges along the river were beautiful and depending on the river height you can walk right along them," says Jennifer M. about Ledges State Park Campground.

Bird watching: Little Wall Lake County Park provides habitat for diverse bird species. "The frogs in the nearby swamp were fun to hear. Lots of birds too," notes Mary about the park environment at Little Wall Lake County Park.

What campers like

Well-maintained facilities: Kennedy Park campgrounds receive positive reviews for upkeep. "I can't say enough about Kennedy Memorial County park in Fort Dodge Iowa. Its beautiful well taken care of has a nice playground and access to a beautiful golf course! And FREE WIFI! All for $18.00 a night," writes Mary J.

Affordable camping: Pilot Knob State Park offers budget-friendly sites. "For $12/night on a 30AMP hookup, I really can't complain. This is my first of many stops in the new RV, needed a place to camp out before getting it serviced the next day," shares Jacob B. about Pilot Knob State Park Campground.

Scenic views: Don Williams Park provides waterfront camping with lake vistas. "Great sites right on the lake. Trails, fishing and beautiful lake views," reports Ryan M. about his experience at Don Williams Park.

What you should know

Connectivity limitations: Cell service varies significantly across campgrounds. "No cell service provider functions in this park. The WIFI is shared between dozens of sites, speed averages right around 5mps," reports Jeannie D. about Kennedy County Park.

Weather considerations: Wind exposure affects some camping areas. "This is a nice small camp area that only has one downfall: a lack of wind break. We went when the wind was blowing in typical Iowa summer fashion," explains Bill M. regarding Little Wall Lake Park.

Campground layouts: Site spacing differs between parks. "Unfortunately, the RV park is quite cramped. The sites are somewhat modest in size and the one-way roads are narrow and unmarked," notes Sherry N. about Kennedy Park.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and activities: Several parks feature dedicated children's areas. "Multiple kids parks, beach area, fishing areas with boat ramps, trails, kids butterfly garden," explains Megan H. about Kennedy County Park facilities.

Swimming options: Little Wall Lake provides water recreation for children. "Clean and host was nice. Kids had a fun time and want to come back. Close to the interstate and easy to get to," shares Traci J. about The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park.

Shower facilities: Bathroom amenities vary between parks. "The bathrooms are updated and nice. When there is heavy rain you will however have your own pond at most sites," Lisa M. explains about Clear Lake State Park Campground.

Tips from RVers

Campsite selection: End sites often provide more space. "We were lucky to snag Site 34 (reserved about three months in advance) – it was on the end, making it a much larger site than the interior sites (all end sites in our section were larger)," advises Lee D.

Leveling challenges: Some sites require additional equipment. "Not all sites are level, and most do not have delineated parking pads (there is a small pavement indent to show where to access the site)," warns Lee D. about Pilot Knob State Park.

Hook-up availability: Full-service sites are limited at many parks. "There are only 6 full hook up sites and the care taker made sure we got one. The rest of the sites are beautiful with electric hook up," explains Lai La L. about Clear Lake State Park.
