Best Tent Camping near Humboldt, IA

Tent campgrounds near Humboldt, Iowa provide basic amenities for outdoor recreation in the central Iowa landscape. Ambrose A. Call State Park Campground offers tent sites with electric hookups, picnic tables, and toilet facilities between April 1 and November 1. Other options include Devine Wildlife Area near Bode and Big Wall Lake Wildlife Management Area, both offering more primitive tent camping experiences without developed amenities.

Tent campsites in this region typically feature minimal facilities. Ambrose A. Call State Park permits fires and allows pets, while providing electric hookups and toilets. Most wildlife management areas like Big Wall Lake and Devine Wildlife Area lack drinking water, toilets, and fire rings, requiring campers to be self-sufficient. These areas generally do not offer reservations, operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Seasonal access varies, with state park campgrounds closing during winter months.

The camping experience around Humboldt reflects Iowa's quiet countryside setting. Areas like Big Wall Lake Wildlife Management Area provide more secluded experiences but require preparation. A camper noted that "We stopped here when we drove from NY to CO and it was fine," though another mentioned that "This place was really bad probably because of the low water levels." Ambrose A. Call State Park receives higher ratings despite being described as a "buggy small area" with "several trails and a small campground." Tent campers should prepare for varying conditions and limited amenities, particularly at wildlife management areas where primitive backcountry tent camping is the norm rather than developed campgrounds.

    Dolliver Memorial State Park Campground

    Beautiful and tranquil

Dolliver State Park was our maiden voyage in our travel trailer and it was obvious we were pitiful newbies! The park's beauty and tranquility did get disturbed a couple times when our dogs got loose (newbs!). The park staff were friendly and very helpful as were our fellow campers. The sites are mostly level with picnic tables and fire rings. Sites range from shady to sunny and the reservation website depicts the sites with a small photo and details about the amount of slope and shade. Cell service was good but no WiFi without a hotspot for us. We had fun, learned a lot and plan to camp here again!

    memoirs park

    Great Campground

This is a great campground in Mankato, MN.  The sites are huge and offer water and electric.  The shower house/bathrooms were decent - a little outdated, but not too bad.  There was also a portable toilet near our site.  We wish there was sewer, but we understand that being so close to the river this may not be possible.  We will definitely stay here again if we are in the area.

    Pilot Knob State Park Campground

Camping in the woods near town

Located by New Ulm, MN this campground has plenty of activities in the park or very near the park. Plenty of hiking trails, playground for the kids, and an amazing sand bottom swimming pond surrounded by sand beach. Golf is also nearby at The New Ulm Country Club which is open to the public. Nice level sites with electric, picnic tables and fire rings.

North Equestrian Campground — Brushy Creek State Recreation Area

    North Equine Campground

The only open site was in the North Equine Campground so we took a chance. We really did like the Campground, it was well maintained, clean and quiet. There were a few campers with horse but not many. Hitching posts behind each site which we enjoyed seeing. The roads inside the campground were all asphalt so lots of bikers enjoying rides around the grounds. There was also a nice playground for the kids surrounded by a well maintained, large, grassy area. There were many empty sites because so many had no electric. It made for lots of nice open space. Unfortunately, we had no shade in the afternoon so weren't able to eat dinner outside or enjoy a fire in the evening. We are fortunate we camped in a 5th wheel so we could escape the heat, we would have left after the first night otherwise.
We did drive through the Beach Campground and the South Equine Campground. Beach had very little shade and was primarily families with younger children. The beach looked real nice, not too crowded for a hot, July day. North Equine was where most of the horse folks were staying it was quite crowded. A very bustling area.

    Hamilton County Fairgrounds

Only place to camp in cute town

With the Riverside campground closed, this is the only place to camp in Webster City. It’s what you expect from a fairgrounds campground: open gravel/field with RV hook ups along the back fence, no shade or privacy, showers and restrooms in a fairground building. But everyone is pretty friendly and the town is cute. There were no individual picnic tables or fire pits, but most of the RV’ers seemed to have that figured out with their own equipment.

    Bells Mills County Park

    Beautiful spot

Quiet spot, clean area. Camp host were very friendly, most spots were easy pull throughs or back in's with a freestyle camper parking arrangement. Lots of space for each unit.

    Little Wall Lake County Park

    Check weather

This is a nice small camp area that only has one downfall: a lack of wind break. We went when the wind was blowing in typical Iowa summer fashion. The grounds are peaceful and there's lots of great plant and flower spotting. When we were there, there were only a few small bass boats on the water, no water sports.

    Don Williams Park

    Nice County Park

Camped by tent, basic amenities on-site-fire ring, table, etc. Went kayaking on lake and then on Des Moines River (close by). Nice wildlife areas, hiking, fishing, etc. Pleasant staff.
