Within the Rathbun Recreation Area, Island View Campground sits along the shores of Rathbun Lake under Army Corps of Engineers management. The campground accommodates RVs up to 145 feet with electric hookups and provides multiple access options including drive-in, walk-in, and boat-in sites. Three boat ramps serve the property, making this a hub for boaters exploring southern Iowa's largest lake.
Sites spread across both forested and open terrain, with many positioned to overlook the water. Mitch C. notes that "a lot of spots have a nice view of the water," particularly the M-loop sites closest to the shoreline. The campground maintains clean restrooms and shower facilities throughout the property, along with dump stations and picnic tables at each site. A playground and nearby baseball fields provide options for families.
Fishing produces regular catches of crappie, while the lake supports kayaking and swimming activities. The facility tends to stay busy through the season, with high occupancy extending well past Labor Day. Access roads can present rough conditions, so campers should prepare accordingly.
For those seeking additional options in the area, camping near Moravia provides alternatives. Reservations help secure preferred sites during peak periods from May through September.
